Thanks for your feedback Grohgreg, but it WAS Earthlink tech support I conacted, and not Hughesnet. After another grueling 2 days of phone calls and 9 (NINE, thats right!) "transfer to another department" (they might be able to SPEAK broken English, but their ability to COMPREHEND the MEANING of what is spoken is akin to parakeets understanding what they are "talking about".), I was FINALLY told that Earthlink was passing off all its satellite connectivity to Hughesnet. and that my "old" DW4000 modem was either broken or obsolete, and it time to be replaced. Well interestingly enough the last Earthlink rep I spoke to PHONED Hughesnet and told me that the DW4000 and even the DW3000 was STILL being used by people over at HUGHES. So the Earthlink people lied to me more than once. My 10th telephone transfer was from a rep. at Earthlink, who finally told me to call Hughes, who when I finally called, had no idea of what I was talking about. All said, I think Earthlink AND Hughes need to be sued!! After doing extensive searches on THIS site, it turns out that MANY people were disconnected unexpectedly by Earthlink, and were made to feel forced into shelling out anywhere from $200-$500 to maintain their satellite connectivity and upgrade to what sounds like a disappointing HNS700s. It's almost like a stick-up at gunpoint. I hope Earthlink and Hughes rot in hell, and go belly up. If I can't get a REASONABLE resolution, then I'll dump them and go for Verizon or Alltel wireless over-the-air internet service. I think its where internet is going anyway, and I think both the other companies are feeling the squeeze, and are trying to squeeze every last penny out of their remaining loyal customers. Loyalty seems to be meaningless anymore in the business world, and they don't care that you stuck with them for 6 or 7 years... all they want is your $$$$$$$$$$$$. To HELL with them BOTH!
AND... incidently, my "old" DW4000 works just fine, since it connected to the registration sever, and was fully recommissioned and registered within seconds of running WEBSETUP. If the modem was defective, it would have never been able to do that. It was just after the re-regestering, that it changed my previous IP address, and also changed my "default gateway" , which is no longer "ping-able". Interesting....

I was unaware that Earthlink had outsourced their call center operations to India.
So is your connection up - or down - now?
By the way, I'm a long term Hughes customer too - back since the old gray dish days. Their gateway servers have never been PINGable, and Earthlink leases their gateways from Hughes. So it follows that Earthlink gateways aren't PINGable either.
And I can attest that the HN7000S is a significantly more capable modem than any that preceded it, especially in DVB-S2 mode. But even IT is a second line modem now, the big push is toward fielding the newer HN9000 hardware. That's cuz Hughes has it's own Ka-band satellite at 95W (Spaceway 3), over which these 9000s work. The more folks they can get on Ka-band, the more Ku-band leases they can eventually abandon. The down side is that the 9000 requires 100% replacement of all your hardware, indoor and out.
The older HN7000S modem is currently installed only for new customers or "upgrades" that cannot obtain line of sight with Spaceway 3. But FYI, the 7000 works on the same Ku-band outdoor unit that your DW4000 does. Assuming your ODU hasn't degraded over time, it will support the HN7000S modem. There are plenty HN7000S customers out there using the same old outdoor stuff they originally got with their DW4000. Many of them didn't pay a cent for their upgrade, as Hughes has been passing 7000s out free for quite a while now.
But the offer was apparently not extended to Earthlink or you'd have known about it already. That however, is not Hughes fault. Its due to the way Earthlink wrote the original contract with them. Nevertheless, there are plenty of HN7000S modems on eBay nowadays, you should be able to pick up one pretty cheap, and do a "self-upgrade". There are plenty of folks here that can walk you through the process. The secret is to actually use a self-help forum for help, instead of just a place to vent your frustration.
So I suggest you cool off a few degrees, then start a new thread. Ask for guidance from former Earthlink customers who've jumped ship and started new HughesNet accounts with used modems.

| Grohgreg, no, my connection is still down. I can run websetup successfully, and get recommissioned and get re-registered, but after that, its like they disabled the "receive modem". It sends countless upstream transmissions through the ITU, but less than 3 packets down from the IRU. Redundant or not, I think people need to see and recognize this outrageous treatment of their longstanding customers, and be as outraged (or more), than myself, so that many complaints are sent to Earthlink for such poor customer service. Don't forget, its the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. I'm just hoping that people will send irate responses to Earthlink at being suddenly cut off from their internet connections, and asking for free modem upgrades, or at least something reasonable, than acting like lobotomized sheep who mindlessly and automatically shell out the $300,400,500 to needlessly upgrade to a newer modem that they really don't need. Hughesnet themselves admitted that they still support the DW3000 and DW4000 modems. It's Earthlinks agenda, to try to stay alive as as ISP, as their only two strongpoints seem to be dialup and DSL.

If you're putting all your stock in BPL as your final solution, you might want to read this: »arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20···tem.html . It might not hurt to be be a little more receptive toward thinking about a Plan C.
Until then - and since you have a home network - presumably you used the old Direcway LCCU. It has to be reinstalled after running websetup and/or the Direcway software (which is not a bad idea if you haven't already done so). So do any of the self-hosted tweaks (see FAQ) that you may previously have applied to your computer.
If you seriously rely upon a the satellite connection to support a business, it follows that you'd be paying for a 2nd phoneline as well (to support the DW4000 fallback mode). That means something over $90/mo for the DW4000 plan PLUS the redundant phoneline. A newer modem means you can shed the 2nd phoneline cost. If you don't think a complete new Ka-band system ($298 installed)is a good investment, please re-read what I posted for Helpless. The cheapest solution is to buy a used HN7000S modem that's not blacklisted, cancel your Earthlink DW4000 account, register yourself as a Hughesnet HN7000S subscriber, go back to work. Service committment? When I upgraded from my old 4000 to the current 7000s, there was no additional service committment required. Zero. But to be safe, input from Earthlink upgraders should be sought to see if that was true for them as well
The most common issue encountered with legitimate upgrading is discovering that your connection has been moved to a transponder of opposing polarization. A little tweak on the POL angle out at the dish, and you're tuned back in. But that's a help item for another day.
One last thing: a comment you made earlier leads me to believe you think the DW7000 and HN7000S are one in the same. They are not. I recommend you avoid any used DW7000 modems, the HN7000S has proved to be a meaningful improvement.
