What is going on with steam?

Argh purchased GTA IV on steam and its been 2 hours and the download has been stuck on download starting status... Bandwidth monitor 0kb Tried logging out then back in, deleted the local content then re-initiated the download and still nothing. Pretty frustrating.

It is a massively sized game 10gb+

With hundreds and thousands of people buying it through Steam, not surprising to see some bandwidth issues.

I had that issue a few weeks ago re-installing HL2.
The download would not start.

I ended up just clicking on the game name (as you would when you want to play) and then the download started.

Took about 10 minutes until I sait F this and started clicking on stuff...maybe that will work.

you can always try deleting clientregistry.blob and reloading steam

It's a 14GB download or so, and there's most likely more people than just you waiting to dl the entire package lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a queue enforced so at least not everyone is downloading at the same time and suffering at 5kb/s . Patience .

I honestly think it was some bug with steam. At the time their content servers were below average usage. Once I paused and unpaused the download it finally started

I have this problem with every download from steam. I have to screw aound with it for a few minutes before it will do anything. It will download, you just have to prod it a few times.

I have this issue with all patches on Steam. It says Starting Update but never actually starts until I pause then resume the update.

I was able to buy GTAIV friday night around midnight, and play it later that morning without any problems. Maybe check your free disk space?

I've never seen Steam downloads really mess up. They've always worked at their full speed. If anything, I find that when they get stuck, pausing them and then resuming them will get it going again. But if it was an issue with GTA IV fans downloading the game, the slots might have ran out or the content server crashed. Anything could've happened, much like Steam's Friday Night 10 minute outages on the Steam Community for maintenance.
