Re: [iPhone] ripping dvd to play on iphone

You should decrease the quality or bitrate to save disk space, unless you're streaming them to an HDTV also? I've played around with them and even 1000Kbps is probably a little too high for 480x320 video.
I prefer to keep the higher quality since I rip it once and it works on my TV, iPhone, and classic iPod. I only throw things on my iPhone when i plan on watching them otherwise I keep it cleaned off.

I'm running it now. Is it supposed to take 5 hours plus to encode a movie?
That depends on the speed of your CPU, but it very well could.

If running Mac, you can use Toast to convert to Ipod format.

I've been using handbrake and just straight ripping them (no mactheripper first unless the disc errors..which is rare on a mac). For iPod they are around 1-1.5 GB per. Same with using the PS3 settiing. I haven't tried the universal.

All my rips are from Blu-Ray and they are still only 500MB or so.

I'd take the time to insult your intelligence, but you probably wouldn't get it.

About how much disk space would a two hour movie take up?
Mine take about 500MB ... give or take. I use 2-pass VBR with a maximum bitrate of 1000Kbps. When I stream them across 3G from my home server they only use about 300-500Kbps of outbound bandwidth.

Handbrake is a GREAT free app. I recommend TMPGEnc if any Windows folks are reading this and want a much more robust (easier to use but retail priced) app.

As far as settings for iPhone video, just use 480x320 MPEG-4 AVC with a baseline profile (Level 4.1 or less) and AAC 128Kbps for audio.

I'm disappointed with Handbrake.
Never a problem here, what DVDs did you feed it?

First I rip the DVD with either Ripit, MactheRipper, or if both of those fail I use AnyDVD(windows only) under VMware Fusion. Then I use the Universal setting under handbrake so the video will work with both my iPhone and AppleTV.

Not to derail this thread.

But I just tried Handbrake for the first time tonight to put a DVD movie on my iTouch and iPhone both.

Something went a mess with TWO different DVDs that came out completely corrupted and unusable. I used the "iTouch/iPhone" presets.

I'm disappointed with Handbrake.
A little OT but if you try the burn with an RW disc first it cuts down on the coaster production.

Ok so to keep this going. For those that have used this what are the best settings.

I plan on messing with this later tonight.

MediaCoder is also an option.

Isn't it best to use MactheRipper first, then use Handbrake to encode the ripped DVD files to play on an iPod/iPhone? Or can Handbrake do more than I realized?

With regard to HB, I converted a DVD to burn onto a DVD-RW and set the audio codec to 5.1 but it still played in 2 channel. Any suggestions?

Re: [iPhone] ripping dvd to play on iphong

Took me as long to post that information as it took you to post a reply. It would be good for people to do their own investigation when suggestions are offered to them. No offense intended.
