Your System - January/February 2009

Post your system specs if you've built/bought a new system during the months of January/February.

If you've changed your system, put "ADDED" next to the new component(s).

If you haven't changed anything - don't post!

Re: Your System - January 2009

My main computer died on me on Christmas eve so I was pretty much forced to build a new computer at a time when money was in short supply but I still think I did OK.

SUPERMICRO MBD-C2SEE-O LGA 775 Intel G43 ATX Intel Motherboard
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···13182162

Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···19116072

So, I order everything New Years Eve to overnight so I could get it on the 2nd which was fine. Opened up the mobo and instantly panicked. When I ordered I only had 15 minutes to get the order in before newegg could do the over night so in my haste I didn't notice that the mobo had no IDE slots. AKKK!!! The WinXP drive I wanted to use that had all my programs loaded on is IDE and this mobo was only SATA. Fortunately I had a sata drive so I would have to load XP and my programs. On the down side I didn't have a sata optical so I had drive 50 miles over to Utica to get the only drive I could find (Lite-On 20x dvd/cd combo). Pain in the ass but not tragic. No that would come later when I started to build it and found the PSU I just bought:

Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX12V Power Supply - Retail
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···17153023

didn't have a 8-pin connector for the mobo. After my wife talked me in off the ledge (to be fair we live in a ground floor apartment) I started surfing around the web and found a ton of build sites that said you could still use the 4-pin P4 connector as long as you weren't using a quad core. Cautiously I went ahead with the build and to my surprise everything works fine. Because that mobo has onboard video I left my vid card out to cut down on the load while I wait for my 4-8 pin connector to arrive. I'm constantly checking temps and voltages and physically feeling the wire to make it stays cool and so far everything is fine. The wire is stone cold. I'm hoping as long as I just play WoW on it and surf a bit it should be ok. Still even with everything that went crazy I kept the price (including gas to fetch the dvd drive) under 400.

Not exactly how I expected to spend my vacation that took me three months to get my boss to approve. Runs pretty quick compared to my AMD 64 3500 plus I upgraded my Win to x64 so I could "utilize" the 4 gigs of ram.
--
Andy Rautins led the scoring with 26 as the Orange had five players in double figures again. One trouble spot Harris hurt his hand and didn't play the 2nd half. 1-0 in the Big East and next up @ S. Fla on 1/2/09

I just bought a Dell Vostro 1710 as a second PC to be able to use in any room of the house. Although this is mainly intended as a business laptop, I wanted a sub-$1000 model that could use a discrete graphics card and still had XP Pro on it (it comes with an upgrade option to Vista Business).

Since my mother runs an architectural leaded glass business out of the house, I used her business name on the order (which they require), but paid for it in my name and with my credit card. The total came to $946.10, and the estimated ship date is 01/15/2009.

Specs:

Dell Vostro 1710

CPU: Intel Core2 Duo T5870 (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Display: 17.0 inch Widescreen WXGA+ LCD Anti-Glare Display
RAM: 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS (128 bit)
HDD: 250GB 7200RPM SATA-150 Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
OS: Windows Vista Business Bonus-Windows XP Professional downgrade (XP Pro installed)
Optical Drive: 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability, with Roxio Creator
Audio: High Definition Audio 2.0 - I will probably use separate speakers
Network: Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Internal Card/10-100-1G Ethernet
Ports: 6x High Speed USB, Type A, 1x IEE1394 4-pin, 15-pin HD VGA D-Sub, Audio LineOut/Headphones, Microphone Input
Battery: 5800mAh 6 cell, 5hr estimated life per mfr.
Weight: 7.1 lbs - a little on the heavy side for a laptop.

In addition, I have made some changes to my current desktop system, first posted in »Your System - January 2007, and updated the next month with the addition of the ViewSonic VG2021m monitor.

Samsung SH-S182M 18x DVDRAM drive - died, replaced with Philips SPD2413BD 20x DVDRW, which also died. Replaced 4 months ago with Pioneer DVR-115D DVDRW.

Added 2 HDD to system, one a Seagate 7200.11 1000GB SATA II, the other a Maxtor 500GB SATA II.

The 300GB OneTouch died, and was replaced by a 500GB Seagate drive like the 300 & 400 GB ones that are still working. It died, and was replaced with a 640GB Iomega UltraMax USB/Firewire drive in Jul 2007. It died in Feb 2008, but it was only the interface. I replaced it with a Seagate FreeAgent 750GB USB drive.

The Maxtor in the FireExpress enclosure also died, but again it was only the interface. I replaced it with a 300GB Seagate FreeAgent USB.

I was using the externals to store all the music, movies and so on I had downloaded over the years, and after losing data the first time one of them died, I made a regular habit of backing everything up onto CDR, then DVDR. This also explains how I've gone through so many optical drives - backing up several hundred GB worth of data really puts stress on them, shortening the laser's life.

To reduce the stress on my burners, I bought 3 more Seagate FreeAgent drives, which I copy anything I've downloaded onto and then disconnect them until the next time I add content to them. The three drives that were in the enclosure and the Iomega I later found were good; one of these went into my mother's PC to use as a place to store image backups after its main HDD died back in Aug 2008. The other two are in static bags waiting for later use. I may put them into enclosures to use with my Vostro laptop - both have SATA interfaces.

I rebuilt my desktop system today. It took about 3 1/2 hours to remove the old hardware amd install the new components.

Motherboard LanParty nf4 Ultra-D AMD s939 Asus P5Q SE Plus Intel LGA 775

CPU AMD Athlon 64 San Diego 3700+ Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0 GHz

RAM Corsair XMS PC3200/DDR400 2x1GB G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK 2x1GB DDR3 1066/PC8500

Video Asus NVIDIA EN7600GS 256MB PCI-E 16X XFX PV-T84J-YAJG 540MHz 512MB DDR2 NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT

Internal HDD (3) - Seagate ST3320820AS Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA II (boot), WD WD10EACS-00D6B1 1TB SATA II, Seagate ST31000340AS Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II 1TB

(note on the Seagate ST31000340AS: it has f/w SX15, so is not affected by the recent trouble with this model. It is also why I chose a WD instead for another drive. For $40 more, I'll have fewer problems.)

External HDD 2 Seagate USB/1394a, one 300GB, the other 400GB. 2 Seagate FreeAgent desktop, one 320GB, the other 750GB.

Optical Drive(s) Pioneer 20X DVD-RW DVR-115D, re-used from old system. Lite-On 22X DVD-RW iHAS422 8 SATA (New).

The monitor, printer and scanner are the same as before. I also installed a 1394a PCI card to run the two Seagate externals using this interface. In addition, I installed the WinTV 250 PVR card and the eSATA RAID card from the old system.

The power supply (ThermalTake PurePower 600 W0129RU) and case (Apevia XPlorer Black) are being re-used.

This is the third system I've put together, and the best one yet. Time to put it through some benchmark testing - the CPU is running quite cool - both cores are at 36 deg. C.

Bought an HP a6650f on thanksgiving, but that mostly crapped out on me in January. First the Samsung 500gig drive crapped out, and then the MB died when I swapped in a bigger power supply. So today's vintage is now....

Gigabyte MA78GPM-DS2H

AMD Phenom X4 9550 (salvaged from the HP)

BFG NVidia GeForce 9800GT OC 512MB GDDR3

6 gigs of Samsumg DDR2 800 ram (salvaged from the HP)

Raidmax Volcano 630W power supply

Disks: All SATA
Primary disk: Seagate ST3160827AS 160GB
Others:
Maxtor STM31000340AS 1TB
Western Digital WD3200KS-00PFB0 320GB
Hitachi Deathstar HDP725050GLA360 500GB (HP replacement for the crapped out Samsung)

DVD/DL: HP DH16A6L (salvaged from the HP)
DVD #2: External Plextor PX-708UF2

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 906BW

Cam: Logitech QuickCam Orbit/Sphere AF

OS:Windows Vista Ultimate 64

Logitech LX700/MX3000 Keyboard/Mouse combo

And I thought my days of customization were over. I just couldn't sit still and leave well enough alone. HP told me I voided the warranty by adding the extra hard drives and swapping out the power supply. What a piece of crap the original setup was. But I am back on top with a system that screams good enough for me for a while.

Sweet jesus I just installed the video card and ...wow. Running 60 fraps everywhere in WoW cranked.

All it is stuffed in Lian-Li P-61 case which I already had.

This will complete the build. Nice little system... total cost $585 w/extended warranty on PSU.
