Not a lot of action here...

Not a lot of posts on this forum huh? Last one was around a week ago or so, oh well. Hope everyone had a good holiday! Maybe I'll think of a topic to start a thread with, lol.

I try to start a topic once in awhile but removed seems to scare most of the posters away I've been working a lot during the holidays, and now that they cut my hours I have time to post now.

It's true. I'm loving this slightly cooler weather, though.

Made a trip to Galveston yesterday. First time since Ike. I was amazed at how much is still left to do. I've seen the pictures and video on the TV of course but it really doesn't sink in until you see it in person. There is still so much debris everywhere, vehicles, boats etc.
I was truly awestruck by what I saw.

Yeah I've been there twice once in September to visit an aunt who had her first story gutted. It was horrible how much stuff was piled at the end of the streets and when you go down 61st street there is a boat pained with "Please let us go home" and another one with "Kill looters" I visited again this December and its looking better but there is just so much to do still.

We finally are having "january" weather here in Houston. However, the weather dudes say it will warm back up tomorrow (Wednesday) and stay warm for a few days.

I try to hide regardless of the season.
Strangely, I seem to have more time online during the holidays.

My college-slacker daughter is in town this week. She wants to visit Kemah (better known as Little Fertittaville) while she is here. I suspect we will also give in to curiosity and take a look at the damage wrought by Ike in the process.
Her mom and I had our first date on Crystal Beach many moons ago....

Yeah, I was literally depressed for weeks after Ike's visit. Working in the HVAC business there, I've been all over Galveston, from one end of the island to the other. I lived there my whole life, until two and a half years ago when we moved to the mainland. It's a hell of a lot better than it was, but the old girl has taken a beating and she shows it.

WOW, devastating... I'm a native Houstonian and moved to New Mexico in April, '04. My last trip to Galveston area was March, '04.

In my life I had spent a lot of weekends along the Galveston seawall and Westward to Surfside and Quintana (Freeport Jetties). Last Hurricane that went through and tore it up like Ike was Alicia back in '83, I believe. I went down and checked it all out back then just like you did when you took your photos.

Is the hotel on the pier still called the Flagship Hotel? Friends and I used to spend Friday nights fishing off of there (chasing chicks too!) back in late '60's and early '70's.

I wonder what happended at the San Luis Pass toll bridge? Did you get that far West?

The old San Luis Pass fishing pier at the Western end of the toll bridge was one of my favorite fishin' spots for over 30 years. It's likely no longer there now...

Anyway, thanks for posting the images. I looked at every one of them and recognized quite a few of the specific areas you visited.

Yes, Alicia was in '83. Though they were both devastating and some of the images are the same, such as this image of boats scattered along I-45. Ike brought major flooding to 75% of the island. Parts of downtown and The Strand got nine feet of water. Many businesses have still not opened.

The Flagship took a pretty severe hit. The ramp from The Seawall to the pier was destroyed, so there is no access to the hotel or fishing pier. Both the 61st Street and 91st Street fishing piers were destroyed. Murdoch's Bathouse and The Balinese Room were destroyed, as was the fairly new Hooter's.

The San Luis Pass toll bridge is still there, but the toll both is closed for now. Blue Water Highway from Treasure Island to Surfside was washed out in many sections. Though passable, there are sections where it is necessary to drive on pasture land or on the beach. The fishing pier was badly damaged and is not open.

If you're interested, The Galveston County Daily News published Ike: Stories of the Storm showing much of the devastation. Some of the images in the book can be seen here.

Thanks SandShark. The images in the link you posted from Galveston Daily news are awsome... the photog is obviously a pro and he certainly captured the moment in a number of those images.

I'm amazed that the ramp to the Flagship was knocked down! I can only imagine what happened to the Bolivar and Crosby-Lynchburg ferry landings... I guess all the fishing piers along the upper Texas coast are still obliterated or under re-construction as well.

Wow... Kemah-Seabrook are a mess to. Last time we were down there was to buy fresh shrimp and Snapper...

My Mom, Step-dad and sister still live in Houston (SW... around Willowbend and S. Post Oak). They went without electric for about 12 days (according to them), but no structural damage to the house, thank goodness.
