Very Confused! How to set up a Linksys behind the 2Wire?

Hey guys, I really need some help and would really appreciate it. I'm not too savvy on wireless networking, but I do know a few things, and I do know that doing this is a bit tricky.

Ok, so yesterday, the AT&T guy came and set everything up. And after he finished with the DVR and the 2Wire, I checked on speedtest.net. 1756kbps down/1475 kbps up! Awesome.

but the problem is that I have a Wireless N Linksys router that I want to set up, as 54mbps isn't great, I want 100+. Its only for one device in particular, being my laptop.

So I told them and he called AT&T's service. The guy on the phone was nice and helpful.

He told me that he disabled the wifi on the 2wire, and found our Linksys and set it out of the 'DMZ' as he called it. Ok, great, I think. Thats a firewall or something, right?

We reset/power cycled everything, and then, I went to my laptop to set up the connection, and now, my Wifi SSID wasn't even showing up! There was a new one that was not normally in our network, named "linksys" and was also wifi N...had to be mine. But it said "limited or no Activity".

The guy said he also changed the IP going to my router.

Now, my Linksys EasyLink Program is detecting that the router is NOT connected, and since the IP is different, I don't know what it is, so I can't access it by putting the IP into Internet Explorer...

...All I really want is to have a Wifi N connection, and only for my laptop. Everything else is connected to the modem itself and works great.

I did find it strange, though, that when I connected my Xbox 360 to the modem to play online, it received the connection. Oddly enough, when I put the wire from the Xbox to the modem, to the Xbox to the Router instead...which was also connected to the modem, I still got a connection! So Wired is working but Wireless is not?

I need some help, anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I tried for months to get my WRT600N to work behind the RG, but eventually gave up. So if you figure it out, let me know!

I just configured mine.

1. Turn off DHCP on the 2wire modem
2.Give the 2wire modem an IP address on the Linksys subnet. lets say 192.168.1.254.
3. Configure the WAN settings on the linksys router to manual and set the gateway or wanIP to 192.168.1.254 subnet 255.255.255.0. and also set the DNS to it also.
4. Configure the gateway in the lan settings of the linksys router to 192.168.1.254.

If you do IPCONFIG from a computer, the settings should look like this.

IP ADD - 192.168.1.XX
DHCP Server - IP of your linksys
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Gateway would be - 192.168.1.254 or IP add of your 2wire modem.

Hope this helps, i don't know what the exact menus for that router are called, but it should be something similar.

It's not that hard to set up a router behind the router, if you are network-configuration inclined and work carefully. But there's really very few reasons to do it.

Getting higher speeds is not a reason to go to 802.11n. 802.11g is plenty fast enough to max out your Internet connection.

My advice is to try using the RG's wireless and see if it works well for you. If it does, great. If not, try putting your own router in there. I'll bet you'll find you can make the RG work for you.
