just scan on samsung

The best picture I get on my Samsung widescreen is the JustScan choice. However, most of the time that option doesn't exist, and I opt for 16:9. Why isn't JustScan always available as an option? Should I be contacting my cable provider? Samsung? Grinning and bearing it?

From my Samsung LN46A650's owner manual:

Just Scan: Use the function to see the full image without any cutoff when HDMI (720p/1080i/1080p), Component (1080i/1080p) or DTV (1080i) signals are input

Input Source/Picture Size
ATV, Video, S-Video, Component (480i, 480p)
16:9, Zoom1, Zoom2, 4:3

DTV(720p), Component (720p)
16:9, 4:3, Wide Fit

DTV(1080i), Component (1080i, 1080p), HDMI (720p, 1080i, 1080P)
16:9, 4:3, Wide Fit, Just Scan

PC
16:9, 4:3

Thanks for the reply, but when I run through the options, the JustScan is often not a highlighted possibility. Does that mean that the appropriate signal is not always available?

The Just Scan picture size is only available when certain resolution signals are available and only with certain types of cabling/video connections. Please check what type of cable you are using and check what resolution output your dvd player, cable box, etc. is set at.

A standard DVD player that does not upscale would not allow you to use the Just Scan picture size as it does not meet the minimum 720P resolution requirement for Just Scan. And would probably not be connected to your TV via component or HDMI cables either.

In my case I use RCN's HD/DVR Motorola cable box and have that connected to my TV via HDMI cable.

I have the option of Just Scan on both HD and SD cable channels as I have my cable box set to output 1080i Wide/ Stretch 4:3 Pic. This gives me a full screen SD picture and lets me select Just Scan. The cable box is sending the signal at 1080i even when on an SD channel.

If I change the output from the cable box to 480P the Just Scan picture size option goes away. Even though the signal is still sent via HDMI cable, the resolution is too low to allow the Just Scan picture size setting.

Hope that helped !!
