[connectivity]Loss of sync same time every day?SpringfieldMA

Since Christmas, my DSL connection goes to a crawl every day at around 5pm to at least until midnight, when we turn in.

Come morning, I can pull down speakeasy.net speed tests like 2840/640 consistently.

Level-3 techs and the CO have been involved, and I thought it was fixed night before last. However, last night at 4:47pm the daily problem came back. (For more details check the evening slowdowns sticky at the beginning of the topic list.)

I don't see posts from anyone else in Springfield having problems.

I'm provisioned for 3.0/768, which I've had since it was available in my area.

I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this.

Thanks.

I live in MA too. I live in the Lowell area. I just got Verizon DSL about a month ago. I have the 3.0/768 plan. I got this to save some money because Comcast is expensive. I have a DLink modem/router I bought on line. It sync's great and tells me that the sustainable speed on my line is over 5 Meg. I get great speeds all throughout the day, (2.9 Meg down/ 660 up). But, just like you, My speeds go way down hill at around 5:00-5:30 and vary till around midnight. Then in the morning they are perfect again. I have noticed this almost every week day. You are not alone and I think most people do not notice or care about the evening slow downs. But I do!! This is so un-acceptable I just don't know where to start or what to do to get this resolved. It is definitely an overloaded network issue. Don't let them tell you otherwise. The only difference between you and I is that my modem never loses sync. But the slow downs are just awful.
Verizon tech support is the biggest joke I have ever had to deal with and I am never calling them back again! So where do we go from here?

I'd say to start with regular Vzn customer support, and try to find someone who will help. But, that's too frustrating...Been there, done that.

Go the Verizon Direct forum here at DSLReports.com:

»/forum/vzdirect

Read the posting guidelines, state your problem, and then wait. Your post might even slip to page two, like mine did.

Last night was the first that my connection didn't go completely south around 5pm. Even though the speed test was 455 down, it was still progress; before, I couldn't even load speakeasy.net.

Speeds bounced all over the rest of last night, then stabilized around 2700 kbps before midnight. Again, progress.

This morning, five minutes ago:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 2842 kbps (355.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 690 kbps (86.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

If, after trying the Verizon Direct forum, you still have problems. Call regular Vzn support and ask for "Retention" or "the Retain Group." Believe me, Vzn doesn't want to see churn due to network issues.

BTW, thanks for your reply. I was beginning to think my posts were invisible here.

Good luck.

Hi,

Is your Central Office down by WNEC, in front of the now-defunct cinema?

That's my CO; I'm on the 1200 block of Plumtree Rd.

I have also had problems with my connections since Dec. 24th in the evening (5:00-12:00) and am getting very frustrated with it all. I am provisioned for 1.5/384 but paying for 3.0 because of "my distance to the CO" which is in Endicott, NY. It sounds like you and I are having the same problems. I think it is purely an overload issue and since I am on the internet allot most of the day from 8:00AM-8:00PM I am probably one of the few out of that CO that sees the drastic drop off of speed starting around 5PM.

I have called the service number and they said they would send out service this week to check the lines from the pole outside to the CO and that I did not need to be home. Don't know if that has or every will happen. I don't see a difference.

I have also posted to the Verizon Direct forum over the last couple of days and have gotten to the point of them wanting to send out service to check the lines.

Like I said I am quite confident that this is not a line issue, but an overload of router at the CO. I have done line testing here which also indicates that is the problem.

I think they know this is the problem and do not want to admit it and hope that it goes away after all of the college kids go back to school after Christmas break(which will be sometime next week).

So I am left not know what to do at this point. Do I have them scramble the service people to check lines(again... using my time AND theirs) or do I sit tight and hope it goes back to being OK soon?

I say let the tech come out and do the line test thing.

A few days ago I tried to convince a Level-3 tech that it is illogical that a line quality problem shows up every day at 5pm. He didn't see the wisdom in that. Instead, he said my line quality wasn't good enough for 3.0/768 (which I fought to get in 2007). If that was the case, why am I getting 28xx/680ish speed tests when I'm not having the freeze issue? Needless to say, I got out of that call fast. It's now with Vzn Direct and a tech service call.

My tech is coming out tomorrow morning. Standby for news on that.

Meanwhile, last night things got progressively better from 5pm (455 down) to 28xx down at midnight. Vzn Direct says nothing was being worked on at the CO. Dunno, something changed, and it wasn't anything in my system/house.

Let's see how it shakes out in about 58 minutes (5pm).
Good luck.

It's a good thing to see(I think) that I am not the only person that is pulling their hair out because service reps. are not seeing the point that this all starts happening at the same time every day. For me I can't see this being a line issue. I don't think copper wires have the ability to say, "OK, 5:00PM I'm off on break until 12:00PM" and then start working again.

What I see from line testing I have done is a couple of routers crapping out at 5PM at the CO(or wherever they are) that have names indicating they are Verizon routers that are 1 to 4 hops from my router. For me it says... overload! I'm going to take your advise and have them come out to check the lines(again?). I'll post back when I know more.

Well, at 5:08pm last night my connection shut down, again. The only sites I could get to had few graphics (like DSLReports.com), and only with partial loads. Still wasn't back up at midnight.

This morning it's back to normal. Here's a test I just ran:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 2858 kbps (357.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 690 kbps (86.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

The tech was just here. He had the CO change my router. They say I may have some noise from the White Westell modem. But, I told him it's illogical that it would only occur from 5pm onwards. Anyway, he's coming back to test the house run. Interesting that the tech brought up congestion (at the CO) by people coming home from work and school as a possible cause.

Let's see what happens at 5pm this evening...

Yes, Thats my CO... I'm off Plumtree between Bradley and Roosevelt. Between 5:00 and 10:00 last night I was streaming Netflix movies in HD via a Roku box. No issues with quality.

Edit to add speed test results...

These two are from last night the night before last. My daughter was streaming stuff from Youtube during the tests.

Without Roku stream...

With Roku stream...

This one is from this morning. My daughter was on again (or still)...

Hi kneedeep,

What are you provisioned at? Two of those download tests indicate it's above 3.0.

BTW, it's now 5:53pm and my connection is still solid. Changed me to a different router at the CO, and the tech did some pole work that trimmed some length, maybe a few hundred feet, off my line length.

A Vzn Online DSL rep just called from Providence, RI to check, so it looks like they are finally on top of this. Good thing, too, because I was this far [thumb and forefinger held 1/8-inch apart] from jumping to Comcast. Which may not be a big deal for some, but after having a Vzn email addie well before I signed up for DSL 9 years back, I didn't look forward to the hassle.

Will report back here if things go belly up again.

Well, after a couple of days working with Verizon Direct they are sending out a line tech tomorrow morning to check my line, etc. He called and said he would like to replace the line from the pole to the house. It's over fifty years old so it could be the problem. He also mentioned that the street lights come on at about 5PM and he said they could be injecting noise into the line. So, I guess if he thinks my line could be that marginal and noisy, then I hope he can track down all the things that could be causing the problem. I am hopeful for the possibly that he tracks it all down and can get my speed up 3.0/768. I have my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

It's supposed to be provisioned at 7.1/640. I've had this service for 8-9 years now. I originally signed up for 1.5/90, but the upload was to slow (I work from home). This was the only plan that offered a significant upload speed so I upgraded after after a month or two.

Is it a business plan?

My wire length is just over 13,000 feet, pretty much the limit for residential 3.0/768.

The connection is pretty zippy and, so far, stable after 5pm, now that they've got me on another router.

No, it's a residential plan. I'm also at 13,000 feet. They did try to downgrade me once when I called with sync issues a few years ago. The tech told me I was to far for the service and he was going to put me back to 1.5. I begged him not to... told him it worked fine most of the time and I needed it for work. He said he didn't have a choice. Billing changed my plan to 1.5, which is what I'm paying for now, but they never changed the provisioning. Sync issue went away after VZ voice fixed a wet weather noise issue on the line.

Vzn won't even consider me for 7mbps.

I guess I'll hang in there at 3.0/768 until FIOS comes along. The tech yesterday said that FIOS is being brought into the outskirts of Worcester. Maybe Springfield will be next.

Try to get Vzn to switch you to a different router. It worked for me (and others).

My DSL was very stable over the weekend. And, now it's after 5pm EST, and still no sync issues.

I think it's fixed!

Good luck.

DSL connection still stable...Yippee!

Just a reminder to anyone experiencing serious problems, be sure to ask for a service credit if Vzn doesn't offer one.

The "Retain Group" (Retention) gave me a one-month credit when I first contacted them, before the problem was fixed.

Also, if you don't have the "Inside Wire Maintenance" plan, get it now if you think a tech will need access to your home. Otherwise, you could be faced with some hefty hourly charges.

Good luck.
