trying to install MRTG on a SBC 5100b

old SBC (SF bay area) 5100b evice, 060-d142-a02, firmware 1.0.0.39 running at 384 up 1536 with PPP on the modem, I'm pretty far out from the CO (just over 14k' iirc, can find out if that will help)

still on ATT/SBC these days, I converted to a dry loop/dedicated DSL in October of last year and it's been a nightmare ever since. Since then they've removed 2 bridge taps on my street to drop the distance down - prior to the last dig they did to pull the bridge tap the line was rock solid, once they buried the hole up on the 2nd dig my connection stability went downhill fast.

my SN rates fluctuate between 19 and 12 during the day, and drop to 6 sometimes at night, no pattern to the lower SN other than it happens when it is dark outside. I used to be in the low 20's. Now I lose sync and sit in a redlight, greenlight, 5 seconds, resync loop - lather rinse repeat. The CPE DSL tech who came out claims that DSL is "magic, you never know when it will be up or down or what sort of speeds you'll be able to get out of it. I'd rather you dropped your DL speeds to 512k to help keep things stable". me: uh, no way, we still have a problem. I take that to mean that I'm on my own for trying to figure out where the problem lies. I've gotten pretty good with working the SBC tech support trouble ticket system as a result. SBC tech claims that the only thing he could do to help was to put me on the larger wire size pair that was consistently sized all the way to the CO. But he says it is just too noisy. I agree but believe there is a new problem causing the noise since running these speeds used to be solid. We've agreed to disagree for now.

In order to try to track what is going on during all these resets I turned on the logging on the 5100 but the logs don't seem to provide enough detail to help me understand what is up. So this morning I downloaded and installed MRTG and when it came time to create the config file the cfgmaker program is telling me that "public" is not a valid community name for the 5100. that's where I am stuck right now.

Found the commands for setting the community name via a telnet session (»SpeedStream 5100 Unleashed), but when I tried to telnet into the unit but that was a no go, connection refused. Saw that someone here had posted an arp command to route 10.0.0.1 to the 5100 (can't find post to attach here) but the syntax didn't work for me and I've never used arp before.

appreciate any help - have logs, etc that I can post if that will help

ARP is only for the 5100a as it is a Bridge without an IP until you give it access. 5100b doesn't have Telnet enabled after it is configured. I understand it may work after a reset and before it is set up/configured before it is plugged in, but once it hits DSL signal and sees sync, Telnet is disabled (don't recall exact steps as this was 4-5 Years ago).

Your best bet is to work with AT&T/SBC Direct here »/forum/sbcdirect . There's nothing you can do to the Modem to make you line stable (except move closer to the DSLAM).

appreciate the info/links

any suggestions on how would I figure out the 5100 community name in order to get MRTG going?

Here's some faq's that will help with the CLI
How can I access the Speedsteam modem's CLI?
How can I use the cfg command on the Speedstream modem?

CLI access through the ethernet port on the 5100b, 4100, 4100b Speedstreams only works while while the ATM connection is down. Those FAQs are primarily for persons interested in changing certain modem settings and then leaving them that way before starting a DSL connection through the modem. Once the DSL connection is started, access to the modem's CLI would be lost.

To have a continuous CLI access, you would have to install a console port.

all I'm after is the ability to set the community name in the 5100b so that I can hook MRTG to it to catch snmp data - if there is a different way to achieve this then I'm all ears

>> ... only works while while the ATM connection is down.

I'm assuming that disconnecting the cable to the modem would drop the ATM

in the »SBC DSL FAQ »How can I access the Speedsteam modem's CLI? posting it states:
quote:
The use of SpeedStream5200FTP.exe with the Speedstream CLI must be made with a direct connection to the modem and after either a hard reset or a GUI reset (not a GUI restart) has been performed.
not sure where the hard reset button is, don't see one on the modem. assume that the GUI reset is the Advanced/Reset Modem option

Any reason to fear that the modem will be left inop after doing a GUI reset? All I should need is a printout of the Technican Readout and know my username and password, correct? Don't know what I don't know...

I'm glad my 5100 (E141) doesn't have those issues.

Disconnecting the phone cable is the safest way to be sure the ATM isn't up, but all you really need is no UserID/PW in the modem so that it doesn't automatically try to connect you.

I think the hard reset button is under the label on the bottom. There is a little circle printed on label that you have to punch through.

The GUI reset has dire warnings (I think in red print) that using it will reset/erase all settings. This button differs from the simple restart button which is more like a simple power cycle and nothing is erased.

Neither the GUI reset or the hard reset will make the modem inoperative. After doing these resets, your modem should be back to the factory settings as when you first received it.

After all this, I don't think you will be able to use SNMP either once an ATM connection is up. You can use SNMP when the modem is telnet accessible, but I don't think that limited use is what you are after.

We have developed a DMT tool that might offer some insight into your problem, but it isn't a continuous monitor. It only grabs DMT condition "snapshots": »SBC DSL FAQ »How can I check for the maximum attainable sync speeds with a 5100b/4100 modem?

no, that's a showstopper for me. I'm looking to track real time SN values over an extended period of time while connected/logged in

can anyone confirm/deny for certain that the 5100b SNMP capabilities go away when ATM comes back up?

OK You CAN'T access SNMP when the the modem has either a PPPoE connection that is made by the modem or by a router behind it or a true static IP connection. I presume a DHCP connection would stop SNMP too. The SNMP works at the same time as when you have telnet access.

I've run getif on various 4100 modems. They show these ports to be accessible once you have access to the CLI through the ethernet port. Lose the CLI access and you lose SNMP access.

You could monitor the modem DSL stats through SNMP if you never passed traffic through the modem.

/wild goose chase

thanks for the confirmation. Found ADSLMonitor yesterday, it looks like it queries the /statistics or /techreadout pages for values, I have it installed but not working quite correctly yet. But it looks like it will give me what I'm looking for once config'd correctly. Thanks to all for the help.

Well good luck with that as it isn't easy to use with a speedstream modem.
