| Using Head-Ends for internet in MPLS
My company is looking at a new wan architecture since our old contract is up. We are looking at MPLS. We have one quote from Qwest that includes internet access at each site. We have another quote from AT&T that includes internet at 2 sites and all internet traffic for our other 11 sites would route through those 2. The connection at each head end would be 10Mb. Has anyone used a setup like the 2nd scenario or do you know of the problems that we will have with it? My boss likes the idea because it brings the equipment costs down since we only would put firewalls at the head-ends. I don't like the idea because its just like having point-to-point T1's. Why pay for the MPLS cloud? and why put all your eggs in one basket?

| Its fairly common for larger companys to go with this type of setup. That way there is only 1 or 2 ways to get to the internet that they have control over. Security would be a nightmare if each site had its own gateway to the internet. The only downside of this WAN setup is your connection becomes your umbilical cord, if it goes down just about everything grinds to a halt. |

AT&T and Qwest are two of the higher priced carriers in MPLS services. Regardless of the network design, you're paying too much with either provider. For the sake of due diligence, why don't you invite other providers to provide quotes over in »ISP b2b etc |

| Actually we sent an RFP out to about 20 companies. Qwest has come in the lowest on MPLS plus they are bundling in the routers. First Communications was a close second. They are just reselling Qwest. But with them we don't get Q control or the upgraded routers (FC gives us cisco 1841 instead of 2821). We are still waiting for a final quote from AT&T and we are expecting it to be higher. That's the quote with the head-ends. If its higher, I don't need reasons not go with it. |

New Philadelphia, OH | I know Qwest is running some promotional pricing. that could be why its so cheap. For 11 sites on mpls I think it was about $8000. we have 5 or 6 offices in very rural areas too.

Also decide if you want internet at each location, or separate internet connections at specific sites. You should also give a price to beat, as you know what you already have. |

Why not do a network based internet connection? You need to control the firewall yourself? AT&T has a network based firewall with Internet on the MPLS, so it isn't at a head end site, but built into your cloud.
