Re: [Business] Buying a DOCSIS 3 Complaint Cable Modem

I would rather pay a 3$/month lease fee and have the option to switch it out for a replacement for free if it breaks. Assuming a new D3 modem costs $150 right now (probably low but for the sake of my point) it would take you over four years to break even.

Basically, what's the problem here?

ya just wait right now the cost is high because the serive isn't fully deployed yet and many of the current ones only do 4 chanels anyway

right now the MSO's are buying lots of D3 modems so they will of course get a better priority but after some reach 100% availableity of d3 then you will likely see them in stores

I agree that the post seems a bit spammish to me. However, to play devil's advocate for a moment, I think that there is some validity in one of the questions chlorophyl asks. You assume it costs $150, would your answer be different if the modem costs $50? I ask because I don't know what the modem costs, but it would at least seem to be nice to be able to make the decision to buy or not. If it is really $150 then you are right, I'd lease the thing too. However, I don't have a "choice" as they point out.

Currently, as far as I have seen, a D3 modem will set you back about $500.
Not $50.00... $500.00(Five Hundred Dollars)
Leasing is the current best idea.

I would love some people post some links here on D3 prices, as the only one I've seen is for a Linksys posted in an earlier commented in this thread. I've looked round and have not found any for the Netgear, Motorola, Cisco (Scientific-Atlanta), or SMC that the orginal person mentioned. Cisco's documentation shows that their modem has been around at least a year. It is certainly not my cup of tea to spend a lot on a modem so I do like to price shop. However, so far I can't find any other modems to get a good comparison.

I found four vendors listing the SB6120 at less than $100.

Of course, there is the small issue of whether or not they are believable.

That would be incredibly cheap considering it's basically 4 D2 modems in one
(even with IC there is some development/lead cost, usually paid by early adopters).
but the top one seems to have reasonable ratings (not too hard to fake )

Are you gonna buy ME one?
I'll wait until I NEED one, (which could be quite a while) before I put my cash up.

I'll wait for the Linksys WCM300 to go down to the $125 mark and then that will be my D3 modem.

As for you, no free D3 modem coming your way.
