1 edit | My new-found high ping issues
Hey guys, first post here so go easy on me, you are my last hope! I got recommended by a friend.
So, I live in the countryside, where my best internet connection is a crap 512kbps due to the age of the BT line. As such, I am connected to AOL, have been for over 3 years, and it had been problem free.
However a month ago I started to get disconnect issues, slowdown, and huge ping spikes lasting from seconds to hours. Restarting the routers done nothing. BT checked the line 8 times and everything checks out. AOL checked everything and configed the router differently and still no joy. NETGEAR tried to fix it with new config and firmware but nothing. They say the router checked out OK in all the tests we ran.
My ping to the servers I use was usually around 160ish, never more than 200. Now it averages at around 400, but can go over 800 for hours. Nothing has been changed server side or locally on my machine. No one else is on my network. Here is my last tracert:

As you can see it times out and does this to all the concerned servers which I have been using for years and had no previous problems with. The AOL "tech team" didn't even know what a tracert was and so pushed my to T and back again and no success. I have a MAC code, but am worried that the issue will resurface with another ISP, so I would prefer to have this fixed! Hope you guys can help me out!
Cheers,

1 edit | K I'll have a pop at this.
I'm not familiar with your pinged site. would you mind just bearing with me and tracert www.bbc.co.uk for me and posting the results back please?
From what I can see so far, you are okay on your local tail and the problem 'seems' to be further into the network which neither BT, AOL etc will be able to influence much.
Flipping to another ISP 'may very well' change things - you can always go back to AOL if you are happier in hindsight. |

1 edit | reply to Jeepo Thanks for the help. Since this^^ the connection speed was OK and I didn't lose connection as often. But my ping is still huge, and they don't seem to care much about it. It comes and goes, can be great for a while, or can be like right now and over 600. Here are a few tracert's to www.bbc.co.uk mate, thanks for the help! Also included a new Tracert to the original ip above. EDIT: Won't show my Tracert for some reason so I have included a Note file with the info:
The funny thing is it shows a low ping to the server in the last tracert, but when I actually go to the server I am getting 600+ and it is unusable!
Help!
Thaks in advance!!

So brief anecdote: Couple of years ago, I used Zen as my ISP - was perfectly happy then they made some 'internal network changes' upshot was that it was quicker to go around there network that it was to go through it (same Gateway IP on their edge router) & that just ain't right.
So what I'm saying here is that the ISP's networks are not static, are subject to change and as paying customers, we have the right to choose to stay or go as per their (ISP's)technical and commercial acumen.
That said, the problem seems to centre upon peer1.net - note that in both my results, the responce time shot up even through different IP addresses which I presume (don't know) are different edge routers on their network. I don't know much about tacticalgamer.com but they seem to site behind (or are even hosted by) Peer1.net. It may be worth having a grumble to tacticalgamer.com as presumeably all UK gamers to this site are equilly affected. |
