[POLL] Remote Access Software - 2009 Member Choice

Remote access software is used to control a computer from a remote location over a network. For remote desktop clients, you can see exactly what is on the desktop of the remote computer. All graphics and sounds are passed over the network to be displayed on the client machine. On a fast network, you may not even be aware you are working on a different computer. Many use it on home networks to allow a computer to be used with no monitor or input devices. They can connect to a computer in the office (home or work office) while sitting on the back porch using their laptop. It can be used by customer service reps or by individuals to help friends and family with computer problems. It can also be used in businesses to allow employees to work on computers, virtually, with differing software environments. Some software allows multiple users to connect to one computer at the same time.

There are several different types of clients in use. Some use your web browser as a client, often connecting first to a central website. This has the advantage of simple setup and overcomes problems with firewalls. Others use a standalone client that connects directly to the remote server. This often requires more knowledge to setup (i.e port forwarding), but can be contain more features. Most contain some form of encryption for security reasons and require a username and password to take control of the remote machine.

Logmein. We use it at work. And I use it to fix my dad's computer when he messes something up. It cuts down on the driving.

For me this is one of those cases where it depends on the scenario whether a certain program is used.

~Logmein primarily for systems that I cannot do port forwarding or dyndns addresses with a constantly changing ip address. Mostly for use on systems that I have to support remotely and have no direct access to.

~UltraVNC for pretty much all other cases and the need to keep the monitor active on the machine I'm connecting to.

~Remote Desktop for ease of use when I know the system I'm connecting to has it's port opened/forwarded/etc.. ALSO seems to hold up extremely well under slow bandwidth connections compared to UltraVNC and rivals logmein. I once had to use it regularly on a 21kbps 700ms cellphone connection connected at a res of 1024x768 and while sluggish, it was bearable. VNC under the same circumstances is near impossible.

I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. Breathing and heart beat taxes their whole system, all of their brain cells wasted on life support.-two bit brains, and the second bit is wasted on parity! ~head_spaz

When it works (it's highly unstable in my experience), and you're using it on a Linux host (client can be anything), NoMachines' NX is by far the best. It provides near-native performance even over the internet, can remote an entire virtual desktop or have all the windows separate; running an app over NX is like, from a user interface perspective, like running it on your local machine.
