| [DSL] Speedstream 5260 - upgrade or not?
I've had this modem (Revision 1.6) since I first got DSL back in 1999. I can't remember having any problems with it but I'm wondering if there is newer technology out there I can take advantage of. If so, what are some recommendations and are there any issues with my current modem going forward?

The 5260 is built to support the original High-speed ADSL Standard. That means it supports both G.DMT and ANSI T1.413 protocols which are interchangeable being equally rated for speeds "up to" 8 Mbps Downstream and "up to" 1Mbps Upstream.

I consistently get around 2000K in speed tests You are only connected at 20% - 25% of what the Modem can deliver so it has plenty of spare capacity. If you are not having any issues like sync loss or connection drops, then the Modem is doing its job. As you posted, your line is the limiting factor.

Some people have used modern modems to archive higher sync rate on their lines. Chipsets have improved since the early Alcatel chipsets were used.
The only way you could tell would be to check your line's maxrate on the 5260 and then borrow a Speedstream 5100b, 4100, or 4100b and check the line's maxrate on that modem. |

| He's not going to see any speed changes on a capped line. That is the difference, IMHO. On a regular line there might be a small difference but when speeds are under the 3 Mbps range I doubt it would change anything due to the cap being in place. Only on a higher speed line that is not capped is where a noticeable change may be seen.

| It is possible, but it is not cast in stone.  A newer Modem may very well make no difference at all if the cap has to remain because of too high Attenuation.

| We did a lot of these modem replacements a few years ago to enable people to move up to faster speed plans. There haven't been so many lately as pretty much all those old Alcatel chipset modems have been retired.
I'm pretty sure that every modem replacement with an AR7 modem gained at least a 200-300 kbps maxrate increase and that would be enough of a difference to get the faster speeds.
ajtroglio has a minimum maxrate of at least 2700 or he wouldn't be able to have 2496 speeds. He probably has something over 3000. If his line is quiet, he could qualify for 3008 speeds with a maxrate higher than 3400 (at least on a trial basis to see if it is stable). |
