Black Screen of Death!

Has anyone ever heard of this before and is it fixable?

Want to give a little more info on what the screen is even displaying on this "black screen of death" ?

Possible causes:
- Corrupt file that is required to boot
- BIOS might be corrupt
- CMOS might need to be reset or the CMOS battery might need to be replaced

Possible fixes:
- Reinstall operating system
- Update drivers (if possible)
- Replace damaged hardware?

Lol...

Yes, definitely make sure that you aren't calling this a black screen of death if it's merely the monitor not being plugged into the wall or not powered on

When surfing the net or playing WoW it locks up for 5 mins then it goes back to normal then i close the application and then it locks up again. I turn off my comp then i turn it back on and after the windows logo its just a black screen with a cursor. I did a system restore 3 times and it works for 2 weeks then it just dies off again. First time it happened it said something like win32.exe file missing i dont recall excatly what it said. And yes....the plug is in...and somnambul33t i dont need your LIP. Its not a virus its a corrupt file idk why this happens, had the comp for 3 years and then it happens. I just use my c omp for WoW and surfing the net. No inapporiate vidoes.

Likely video card related:

1) Card overheating/going bad
2) Video drivers (when was you last update)

Is your system well cooled?

How is you power supply? Do you have lots of stuff in your rig (perhaps you are pulling too much power for your PSU).

My card is an 8800gts 640. Its an old card and my powersupply does kick in when playing WoW. My powersupply is only 400w and the video requires 430 or something like that but i never had a problem in the past. My last update for video drivers was this month. I believe it has gotten fried over the years.

power supply is not large problem - card is - replace card as it is overheating and shutting down video.

Good luck...

I don't care what anyone says... it is a driver issue.

Lol fail. My PSU kicks in too when I turn my computer on. Problem is it won't stop until I power down.

Krisnatharok: Your sarcastic remarks really help solve problems. lolz.

Madman: It sounds like there is a driver issue or your video card is failing. Try updating your drivers and running Windows Update. If the problem persists, I'd suggest contacting your video card manufacturer's support line.

Edit: Ah, Yes -- memory "falling out" in a running system will definitely give you a frozen computer / black screen. Make sure it is all the way in and the edges click into place.

Your memory "came loose"? Considering it doesnt work unless its seated properly and that requires it to snap down, how does one's memory "come loose"? Did you remove the clips? Also, having a power supply "kick on"? Just like krisnatharock said... Mine tends to kick on when I hit the power button.... Troll thread it looks like to me.

MANMAN222:

Power supplies are ALWAYS on, in stand by, unless the supply's own rear switch is turned off.

Supplies don't "kick in". Supply fans DO speed up when working harder and getting hotter as a result.

If you are using a cheap, noname brand supply, IT could be another problem.

As far as your RAM coming loose on its own, that CANNOT happen without some action on your part IF you installed it CORRECTLY to start with.

NOTE: ALWAYS always always unplug or turn off the rear switch on a power supply BEFORE plugging or unplugging things on a computer, unless you want to fry something.

ALSO: ALWAYS always always tell people the make and model of ALL of your hardware when asking for help, or people may tend to be very annoyed with you, it gets very old having to tell people this over and over and over, please understand, and spread the word!

Good luck to you and glad you seem to have resolved your issue!

Don't cheap out on the power supply... I learned my lesson.. no black screens but my PC would always shut down on it's own.. after testing I found out it was the PS.. it could hardly put out 10 A on the 12V+ line :-/

I went back to the trusty 5 year old Antec until I get a better one.
