Re: rogers rocket stick: selling as new, but refurbished!

I have no doubt that if you had been pro active Rogers would have been more than happy to send you a new modem in light of your health issues. That being said I am sure Rogers would be more than happy to help if you called customer support and asked nicely. For the rest of us, I still think there is no argument when it comes to renting used modems, or cars, or canoes, or movies, or apartments...

Yes, paranoid alot actually. I'm disabled and have health
issues some of which are related to bronchial problems.

Or they could continue making money from it... tough business decision there.
there is a comparison, in each situation more money will be made... and less will be lost.

paranoid much?

Who's home was this modem in before?
Were they smokers?
Did they have pets?
Are there any allergens in this device now that
it's been used and exposed to other environments?
How clean was the last place the modem was in?
Is there an infestation of bed bugs, ants, termites
or spiders waiting to crawl out of this modem?
What about lice or other human communicable parasites?
But I guess I 'Expect too much...' Don't get me wrong,
I understand what your saying about waste, but for $30.00
the peace of mind is well worth it. Instead of renting them they
should just allow us to keep them once the balance of the
cost of the modem is paid for.
There's no comparison between a $30.00 modem and a
car.

How wasteful, You expect too much. A used modem will work as well as a new modem.
What on earth would they do with all the fully functional used modems?
... you know what your right. I think I might go open a car rental lot and provide new cars for all my customers then have the cars crushed when the car is returned...

I don't remember if I read this here or on another board, but someone who was with Rogers and had been renting the HD PVR for a while called Rogers and inquired about purchasing the unit he was currently using. Regardless of the fact that it was used and was already used when it was given to him as a rental, Rogers still wanted the full $599 + tax for it.

Well I think that for the price they are charging for these services
this equipment should be new.

Consider the cost of rental equipment. It's usually paid for
after the first 6 months of rentals based on volume discounts
and the actual price they pay for the gear.

So for someone to try and make it sound like it's 'OK' to get
used equipment from a service provider like 'Rogers' is a little
naive IMO.

If I'm going to pay Rogers 1K a year for services then I expect
them to at least part with a new $30.00 modem.

has you wondering what? All cable equipment is used, sent back to warehouse, checked, flashed and sent back out again. If you buy a new terminal from a store it is new. if you buy a non HD terminal over the phone I am not sure whether it is new or not. If you bought your modem it should be new.

Interesting, I just just just got hooked up with Rogers lite.
My connection is so fresh I got hooked up last Thursday Aug
the 6th.

When the cable splicer tech came over he handed me an SMC
in a plastic bag with a power brick and the modem, no software
or manuals and there is a big gouge and some scratches in the
casing of the modem.

I asked him about it and he said not to worry because it had
just come from the warehouse this morning.

Hmmmm, has me wondering now.

ANYone can register an imei and the product can still be sealed in the package never opened. The imei is on the outside of the package. its really just used for inventory purposes in the retail level. on the account level, it does not signify when the device was purchased at all, anyone can call up their cell provider, ie: rogers or fido and give YOUR imei to the agejnt and they can list it on theaccount. the only thing that you really have to prove its linked to you is the proof of purchase receipt or warrenty letter / amg waybill.

also if its returned within 15 days in pristine condition, they can technically sell it as new, this is public information they divuldge to customers upon asking, they are allowed to do this also as it is within their policy.

I used to work for Rogers, and I can tell you that they used to sell refurb stuff all the time.

Those rental digital terminals you exchange because the channels are pixelated? It goes right back to the warehouse after it has been "tested" by techs, and then right to the stores which they are sold as "new" boxes for full price. The HD PVRs were $600 at the time, and people bought them thinking they were brand new.

If customers asked I would tell them that the only way they could be 100% sure is if it was factory sealed with a white circle sticker at the front (on the cardboard box, moot now since they use bags), but that those were very few and far between, and not available even at Future Shop/Best Buy. I am a stickler for buying things that are new in their package, so I did buy some HD boxes on the rare occasion that we got a shipment of BRAND NEW terminals.

Same thing when we sold portable internet; the modems (at the time) would be sent to the warehouse then back to the store after a customer refunded it. I had hoped that this policy would've changed but I guess they are still doing it with the rocket sticks.

1st of all, you cannot necessarily get data transmission everywhere that you get voice transmission with these towers. The technology has Not been perfected yet...it is still a relatively new technology.
If you cannot get it to work at the speed you expect then take it back and quit complaining. It does not work for everyone!
If you think that everything you buy is brand new off the assembly line, then you really are naive.
If a product is bought and returned(as long as it is not defective)then it is repackaged and sold again..as new.
Anyone who works in retail will tell you this. And even if it has been used that does not mean it wont work..these things ARE tested before they are repackaged.
No company could stay in business without doing this.

it is rogers/fido to give refurbished products after repairs as your item isn't "new" anymore... main reason why i wont buy a phone from them anymore... esp now since any cell can be refurbished as a customer return within the 15 days... (check new fido policies). I also don't dult roogers is doing the same as they are one of the same.

yes they are allowed to sell, BUT, they must be sold and stated AS refurbished. They are NOT stated as Refurbished but new.

That is what makes it illegal.

yes rogers is legally allowed to re-sell new devices that are returned or have been previously activated

the rocket stick i can get 5.8 mbps, pretty impressive, but the speed also depends on the tower your connected to if the cell tower has more T3 lines on it, you will get faster, if it has less T3 lines you will get slower.

#1 didn't think it was a conspiracy
#2 but you may be right about the rogers stores doing the "evil deed"
#3 and ummm ted died... remember? now its just money sucking corporate ceo's.... LOL
#4 and ummm no, i don't take this personally. just want what's rightfully mine: I paid for it.

and with regards to the last statement. hmmmm
i'd rather be silent then use the lower head.

anyhow. hope that clarifies things.. and btw, i find your disposition quite interesting...

FYI: there are very few rogers rogers wireless stores that aren't 3rd party stores, so regardless of the name there, you didn't get it directly from rogers.

Secondly, the point wasn't WHERE you got it, so much as it was the ignorant fact that you assumed since this happened to you once that this is somehow a company wide conspiracy that MR. Burns is in the corner snickering about.

should you have gotten a refurbished/used one? no.
do mistakes happen? yes.
does it mean they are all out to get you? possibly, but I seriously doubt it this case.

better to think with the lower head than none at all...

Well, there IS a reason why it was sent back, and no one knows. What I do KNOW, is that this device won't work after 3 days of continuously being online.

I get a red/green (3g) flash and nothing works.

Sooo. maybe this is the reason it was sent back.

"Refurbishment is the process of maintenance or minor repair of an item, either aesthetically or mechanically."

Maybe someone purchased it - it did not work in their area and they returned it. Should this then be thrown out? How can you discount a used item if you are already selling it at $0?

Just my 2 cents

The hubahub, at the end of the day, is that i BOUGHT a refurbished product, that was advertised as new.

What's also hubahub, is that i purchased a modem that works with this model MC950d, (CTR350), and they turn around and tell me that they have to replace it with another "newer refurbished" model.

no way. a contract is a contract.
this is going to be fun.
