[General] Using Media Converters to deploy FTTB

What are your experiences with using media converters as the CPE/last mile device to deploy ethernet to a business? How does this compare to using a more sophisticated and expensive product like a small Cisco switch?

The only issue I see here is most media converters, with SM fiber, only go to about 1.2 miles. Your POP would have to be awfully close to the business you are deploying to.

I work with media converters that can go be 80Km, so I'm not worried about that one. The competition is usually layer 2/3 devices...

I'd think manageability would be an issue compared to using switch fiber port.

PON seems to be the preferred FTTP technology for most roll outs rather then switched Ethernet.

My company deploys Ethernet via fibre media adapters very heavily... Usable reach is about 20km for the products we use. Services from 2-100 meg, generally.

It works well, although they are "dumb" devices, so troubleshooting is sometime labour intensive.

Nope - work for a large CLEC, that shall remain nameless...

Fair enough I won't ask then. What brand of media converters do you use?

I see lots of Conoga Perkins 9119 units deployed; although my company doesn't use them. We use Nebula VFast units, ourselves. Google on both will turn up the specs and details. For Multimode, or when more intelligence is required on the link, we use RAD ETX chassis, with appropriate SFP's.

I don't know them. I work for OMNITRON, a US based mfg. Have you heard of OMNITRON?
