 [CATV] Junky DVR boxes

I am about fed up with these DVR boxes, they hardly work, you are constantly having to wait for them to actually respond to your remote, they flake out scheduled recordings and the problems just mount from there. Then you have Insight come out and replace box after box only to have a whole new host of problems with each one. New box last week, remote issues that last box was replaced for remain and tonight the scheduled recording for Scrubs only recorded the last minute of the show.

I'm getting seriously tired of wrestling my DVR box trying to get it to actually work, I'm tired of waiting for Insight to come out and replace my box taking my unwatched recordings with it, I'm tired of paying equal parts exasperation to accompany my entertainment.

FWIW all the signal levels are good in menus and tech said signal was fine.

They are defiantly a challenge. I wish the USB ports were active so you could hook up external storage. But over all, I do wish they did work better.

Just a little update, the box just continues to get worse, I just hope I can wait it out while I clear the DVR of shows I haven't watched.

Every other time you touch the remote, the box does the little command buffer thing, it has crashed (image freezes, box resets itself, loses all program and channel data) 4 times in the last month, it loses program data completely every couple of days, never fully populates (it's lucky if there is a weeks worth, more commonly 1-2 days max). I guess over the summer, when there are no new shows to restrict the DVR exchange, I will have to play cable box lottery hoping I get one that doesn't make me want to take it out into a field Office Space style.

Have Insight reformat the HDD.If that doesn't work, get another one.

Really, you mean I should have the box replaced? Wish I would have thought about that.

BTW, this is my 5th box in 6 months.

Tonight more trouble, while watching a DVR recording, screen went black and I couldn't exit, fast forward, rewind, sump back, jump forward, restart, start another recording, etc. I had to stop both recording, turn box off then turn it back on. Later, after erroneously reporting the DVR as full when at 84%, it started recording a show, it stated it was recording on the guide, red light was on and it was in the DVR menu, I go back later and it disappeared. A few hours later, it did the input buffer bug, but not for the normal 30 seconds, this time for a good 3 minutes, then it took another few minutes to go through the few commands I had given it (2 swap tuner, a couple OK, couple exits, couple "live").

Fun times.

THat is why I had to return mine and just go back to the digital package without the hd/dvr pacakge. I was paying an extra $15.00 a month a for a dvr that sometimes worked or froze a lot.

Is the box high temping? Sounds like the box is getting to hot.

Go into the tech menu and see what the high temp is. Its likely that is causing 4 boxes to go bad in 6 months.

2nd Idea, are you using HDMI to connect to a HD tv? It could be an issue with Moto's firmware. Its a known issue with some brands of TV's but insight never wants to say they have a problem. It has caused my box to have no audio, no picture issues when I had a polaroid brand HD tv in my office with HDMI. I switched to Component cables and it never appeared again.

You can try to flush the box, and see if it will populate with data again. You can find all that information on wiki. You have a chance of loosing your recordings, and loosing the boxes use for several minutes to an hour. But it will cause the box to download all the software from insights servers (last software update I have seen from insight is about 2 versions old, they refuse to put the new ones on the server.)

Temp is fine, around 104 usually, max recorded was 115, box sits flat on a table.

I've switched TVs from SD to HD before the last switch. Watching HD channels seems to have made things worse, but I've tried to switch the box to SD channels on both tuners for a few hours and even switching both to "channel" 1 but neither helped it populate or operate any better. I can unplug it, and it will get marginally better for a few hours then seems to get worse.

All signal levels are fine, both checked by the box and by the tech.

I had previously attempted the DVR authorization/software download on a previous box, but it didn't help at all, so I'm not in a hurry to try it again and risk saved programs I can soon clear off the box with the seasons winding down.

I used one of these boxes on HD for well over a year with no issues, i also had mine hooked up to HDMI.

I actually had one in the living room and one in the bedroom, these boxes were actually 10x better than the crap i had gotten from Time Warner.

My box had frozen up one time, but that was because i had sat a DVD player on top of it for a few hours to test it and it overheated the box.

Agreed, as for the buffer overflow error, once you notice it doing it, don't impatiently hit a bunch of keys, wait a few seconds and it will catch up... if your pounding the remote the entire time it will cause it to lockup and fail. Also the fuller your Hard Drive is the worse the box operates. I have had mine for year and half now no problem. Also, this is an adult forum not a place for cat fights. If that is what your bringing to the table, you can take that else where.

Re: [CATV] Junky DVR boxes

Make no mistake, these boxes could be worse as I had my first box for years before it crapped out (but it was also a new box), since it went out I get replacement after replacement and have problem after problem. It's obvious they are recycling problem boxes and only wiping the HDD, and it's more than just a little bit frustrating paying quite a bit for the service to only have it continuously half work and frustrate.

I understand completely, have you sent Mr Willner an email? He is always very helpful in these situations. I also know that he and many of the other top execs at Insight read these forums.

An Insight tech told us there are no new boxes for Louisville. All are "refurbished." No wonder some of us have had box after box, each one with new problems that were never fixed in the first place.
