[WotLK] Whats the level 80 pve spec for mages?

my friend just quit and gave me his level 80 human mage in mostly naxx gear. i have no idea how to play a mage or the pve spec or rotation. If someone could do me a huge favor and show me what is currently the best pve spec and rotation it would be greatly appriciated thanks

personally I like arcane.

simple spell rotation of 3 arcane blasts. then if missile barrage has proc'd you fire arcane missiles followed by an arcane barrage. If missile barrage didn't proc, then you follow the 3 arcane blasts with an arcane barrage. rinse and repeat.

Yea this works in 3.0.9 - I'm hearing fire looking like the best in 3.1 but till they fix all the bugs it's hard to test or verify that.

Have you ever played a tank? It's the exact opposite. Stand at max range and don't get aggro.

Being a mage is pretty simple right now. If you want something easy to start with, but not necessarilly the top DPS build, go frost. The rotation is Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frostbolt, pop elemental, Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frostbolt....you get the point.

As long as you don't want to raid that works. When you get kicked from a raid at least you know why too!

He has NEVER played a mage. Would jumping into a raid the very first thing he does even be what you would suggest?

that would be quite a change! And would be a good thing. Currently I have yet to see a fire mage that can even do 50% of the damage of an arcane mage with the same level gear.

If you are new to raiding/80, go FFB spec and stack hit until capped and then skip spellpower and go directly into Crit stats, including gemming and chanting into it.

"Crit, you say?" Not because it's top dps, or even good for your OWN dps, but because your arcane mages will love you stacking scorches and being an awesome crit to focus magic on. This would be the most benefit you can do for the raid dps as a whole. Your scorch buff literally adds at least 3% more overall raid DPS to a single target, that's likely more than one person can do alone when you factor in the base 1500-2000dps you're doing (being unlucky on crits), you'll be bringing about 4k-6k dps into the raid - and the best benefit for your guild. Whisper your raid leader that you're stacking scorches and you'll also be guaranteed an invite if they know what they're doing.

Once you get geared, join the ranks of the arcane mages regem your crit to spellpower and let the 'new guy' do the scorching for a while.

BTW, slightly off-topic... I highly advise having at least one frost DK in every raid that you have totw arcane mages in.

Very much so. When you can see other people play your job you can understand your own job. You can ask questions, look at their gear, see their specs, etc. This is a game after all not brain surgery. No one's life is affected by gimping yourself with a frost spec or gimping yourself with a know good raiding spec you just don't have the gear or skill to play. The difference is a know good spec means only the gear or play is bad which can be fixed. A bad spec means you have to fix everything. Just do FFB or AB spam if you must at least you'll be set to expand your dps and rotation to it's full potental eventually.

Arcane isn't the best dps right now per EJ website. I use arcane myself but I like mana regen and the loss in dps isn't really that big right now between FFB and arcane specs. FFB is still the best dps. If a fire mage can't do 50% of the dps they player needs to quite mage and try a new game. I've seen 25 man geared mages pulling 1,400 dps so maybe you've seen some crappy players. 5 minutes on any good mage website will show you arcane or fire is good dps.

The absolute highest dps build right now is an 18/53/0 fireball build, but the untalented hit rating required + the absolute reliance on having dying curse + ids trinkets, requires and absolute best in slot mage to pull it off. I only see about 1 or 2 mages on my own server pull this off, they usually see about 5.5-6k dps.

Second in actual play DPS is arcane mages with totw and pushback reduction. Avg geared DPS 4.5-5k

A close third is FFB, however can easily pass arcane if they have a good night with crits. Arcane is proven a reliable, consistent DPS. Avg geared DPS, 4k on avg, 7k on a good night (usually only one or two bosses see this number) - the crit variance is so high on FFB mages, RNG crittage is not a reliable method to gear once you're at least naxx10 geared.
Boss fights ^ not trash.

Keep in mind, EJ math is mostly based on single target without unpredicted outside variances, mostly using target dummies for verification.

Per EJ:

Spec: 0.53.18 Frostfire
Spell Stats
Crit Rate: 589 - 46.91%
Hit Rate: 290 - 17.06%
Haste: 537 (/32.789 = 16.37%)
Casting Speed: 1.259
Spell Power: 2691
DPS: 5917.72

Spec: 18.53.0 Fireball
Spell Stats
Crit Rate: 429 - 49.42%
Hit Rate: 369 - 17.07%
Haste: 579 (/32.789 = 17.66%)
Casting Speed: 1.273
Spell Power: 2712
DPS: 6254.69

Generally the recommened path is spec Arcane once you hit 80 until you can get like 2,000+ SP and 35-40%+ crits then respec to fire. Lots of mages spec too early so they give fire the appearance of being weaker then arcane end-game which isn't true. Poor players and gear is to account for the lack of dps in those specs not the spec itself. Arcane is much much easier to play to get the dps. A bad arcane player can get the same dps as an average fire player.

I agree and thank you.

^ you're basically reiterating what I stated, however I feel it's better to go FFB once at 80 to help the raid as a whole with scorch buffing if the raid doesn't already have someone doing it. Otherwise, yes, arcane it up if you are looking solely at your own dps.

A recent parse saw my Chaos Bolts critting 75% of the time. I was wondering how that could be, now I think I have to say thank you to our mage. I know she throws up scorch and frostfire spam. Never knew that would buff other casters.

Yea scorch helps the entire raid. Beware it's dropping from 10% to 5% in 3.1

Agreed. I actually rolled my mage because of a few things but one was the only consistant mage in the guild who raided is arcane. I want scorch to help the raid and the other mage refused to respec because he said his dps would drop a little. I don't raid a ton yet on my mage as I'm trying to get another restro druid up to replace me first so I can switch over to dps. I use arcane mainly for heroics, pug raids, and solo'ing. Soon as I start raiding with guild I'll respec fire for scorch.

We usually roll with 3 mages in our raid.

1 Fireball, 2 Arcane

I put focus on the fire mage, the fireball mage focuses the other arcane mage, and that mages focuses me.

Added up, the 3 of us combined DPS on patchwerk is around 20k dps. I'll wws the 25man run Friday and post it in here for oogling.

Depends on your play style and ability to manage cooldowns. Either Fire or Arcane can do well. not sure on Frostfire these days. Fire takes quite a bit more hit rating than Aracne. I personally use arcane and I am regularly in the #1 spot for dps and both 10 and 25 man raids.
