In my 2000 home it is mounted on the breaker box.

In my 1920's home it was in the basement, hanging off a joist near the breaker box.

In my 1970 home of my youth it was in the basement, equidistant from the front and side door.

LOL doorbell transformer. Also could be one for an alarm panel. I've seen ones like that used before as well.

I traced it out when I installed a transformer for my humidifier - it is definitely for the doorbell.

Edit: The furnace is in the basement between the front and back doors directly under the hallway with the bell. Probably was the easiest location to pull wire to both doors from. It was a surprise to find it mounted there I will admit.
