Computer won't boot after update

When I started my computer it said I had an important windows update (windows silverlight KB960353) I had a update for my acer aspire desktop running vista home premium) I checked the box to download both. They couldn't load all the way and I don't remember if the computer shut down or if I did it manually becase it froze. Now when you turn the comp. on a sentence w/ white words pops up and disappears quickly. eventually there is a black screen and finally a cursor a few MINUTES later and then it sits. I have tried safemode. repair, various safe modes. Start windows normally etc. since I can get it to boot i can't do any restore etc. My computer has no factory discs, I did finally get a book a couple weeks ago that showed me how to make a back up. I don't know if it works. Any help would be a blessing.

Windows silverlight is an optional update not a required or important update. You must read things thoroughly and very carefully when you are updating or adding software to your computer. With windows update you can pick and choose the updates you want to install if there is more than one update. I always choose the updates that are important. And don't bother with the other ones. Its odd and strange that you didn't get a copy of the operating system on disk or a recovery disk. Did you buy the computer brand new at a retail store or did you buy it used? Did you activate (register) the copy of vista that was installed on your computer? If you don't register it, after a couple of weeks it will stop working. If you bought it brand new it should have come with a recovery disk. With windows vista you have to have the disk in order to repair the computer if it won't boot up. I would call acer for customer support. Your only other option is to shell out some cash and buy a copy of vista. Or you could go to a computer repair guy to have it fixed. But than again who ever fixes it for you might tell you that you have to buy the operating system in order to fix it. Either way your going to have to spend some money, if you can't get customer support through acer. Good luck.
