Advanced Wireless Settings

Make sure you have this set like below:

RTS Threshold : 2347
Fragmentation : 2346

On each wireless adapter you on your laptop or desktop make sure the above matches the wireless router.

Care to explain why? What are the benefits? Are these settings universally beneficial over the default settings, or are they situation-dependent? If the former, why are they not defaults?

Thats a great question.

Only one of them? The other three were just OK?

I've been testing and compared it with high performance MIMO card I am using it which has higher threshold. So after a few weeks of testing these setting the results look good enough to share them with the fellow DLINK crowd. To improve wireless LAN performance on request/ready to send frame packets.

Just write down your settings prior before you change them.

I'm sure the members appreciate the effort. For the numbers to be truly useful, though, more details are needed:

What were the testing conditions?
What was used as a control?
What were the specific improvements measured?
What tools?

I'm not doubting your results, but before people start turning knobs it would be good to know specifics.

My WBR-2310 defaults to 2346/2346.

I think it's like that on almost all routers as default. I'm not sure what setting the RTS Threshold up one more will necessarily do...

If anything, people have been recommending that we actually LOWER the thresholds.

Let's see today...

Tested partition C: backup with normal compression active and created image of the HDD over the network 100% wireless N only at TX 150 RX 300 Link Quality 100%, Signal Strength 84% RTS set to 2347 in the router. To wireless N access point.

Total size of image file created 6GB
Time to transfer to sub basement File Server 19 minutes.

2nd Test last week was House and 200FT away from the house test. Prior to that was the DIR-655 AP test, prior to that was the 1.22B05 Test..

About to release a how to mod clones DIR-615 and TEW-652BRP video. But you know if it wasn't for the DIR-655 wouldn't have bother testing Wireless N. Prior years I did the Wireless G had samples of the test.

My goal is to improve wireless LAN and gigabit performance. That I did already but the wireless LAN and the way these hardware are design they need to go back tot he drawing boards. But with some modding you can have good wireless router.

I'll be at it..

RTS is set to the max though. Those can try it won't blow-up the router!

This is probably a dumb question and I apologize ahead of time for asking if it is. I'm running XP SP2 and have a DWA-652 in my laptop. Where the heck do I change these settings for my NIC? I went into the Device Manager and opened the properties for the NIC but don't see these setting anywhere.

I already have this set on my DIR-655 and would like to set my NIC to the same to see how it goes.

Thanks!

Not all drivers for NIC has these features. I've had them then lost them in one upgrade for the new nic drivers. What I can tell you most will have it default to Frg: 2346/ RTS: 2346 and some will have it Frg: 2347/ RTS: 2346. If you have it set in the Router that's okay.

Any other settings that you feel improve wireless performance? Like wishlists and any advanced wireless settings to improve less loss on the client?

Like even WLAN Partition, WMM Enable and short GI? To name a few...

No not much there to change.. RTS: FRG: are control packets (data flow) Now if you want to match the ISP rated download speed on your wireless laptop you can do that tweak using tools like Advanced System Care Free under tools there is a TCP/Optimizer and then SG TCP Optimizer. In my network tweak 2009 there is a TCP program that's not available anymore it was free also that will turn on the chip set so the wireless lan adapter WNPU would unload the processing cycles from the main CPU in your laptop. Or you can search for the registry key for Onboard NIC to be enabled.

On all wireless laptops here are configured to use TCP.SYS 100 max connections. Microsoft has it limited to 10 max connections. You'll need the Universal TCP Patcher. Right now you can get TCP-Z and monitor your wireless connection and see how well it's performing when you download and upload. Then run the Universal TCP Patcher and change the default 10 to 100 max.

Also another tweak would be to get the laptop power management under control using the freeware version of..

I gave this a try last night, and for some reason the XBOX 360 DID NOT like this changed setting, it would not connect...after going back in and putting it back on RTS: 2346 it worked fine. I found that odd, any thoughts?

I just set my 4500 to default, didn't change a thing and I'm getting hardly any wireless errors. I'm just not touching it anymore, lol.
