What is a normal transfer rate for a SATA Harddrive?

I downloaded HDtune and was just curious what a good transfer speed is?
I have a 400gig 7200 RPM drive with 8Mb
Another question-----it shows up as an SCSI instead of SATA?
It is an HP built machine.
Thanks.

Not sure if this helps but I have a gigabit network at home - simple unmanaged switch. I ran iperf which is a memory to memory transfer and achieved 47 MB transfer rate. When i transfer a compressed file, say a mp3 or something I get about a 12 MB transfer rate. Now if you are transfering from drive to drive on the same system you should get some different mileage.

320GB SATA 7200RPM 16MB Cache
I get about 110MB/sec max and 87MB/sec average on my 1TB (32MB cache) 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 gb drive and 81MB/sec max and 67MB/sec average on my 320GB (16MB cache) 7200 RPM SATA 3.0gb drive (both in a non-RAID setup). Some controllers will report PATA or SATA as SCSI... this is normal.

WD 640GB
This is a newer Western Digital 640G drive. It benchmarks about 15% faster than a year-old Samsung drive I also have in this box.

Amazing (to me, anyway) that these large, fast drives are going for about 10¢/Gig. I remember spending hundreds of dollars for a 200M (M!) drive back in the day...

Guess mine is average then. Just was curious. Thanks.

Yours IS NOT average.

You are showing 100% cpu usage.

New drivers for your chipset are in order.

For an 8MB cache drive (small by today's standards), those speeds are normal. You are correct, though, that the CPU usage should not be 100%.

Probably because I'm running BOINC on all 4 cores.

Just for fun, what's the model number of that drive? We can compare it to others testing the same unit.

Rifleman, I'm glad you posted this topic. I was wandering the same a while ago. I had screenshots of my benches from the current hard drive I'm using. Right now, it's almost full, cept for 15 gigs or so, which isn't much by todays standards. I'm looking into getting a new single sata drive and was wandering what the best performing non raptor drives were?

I will have to get some benchmarks of my current hard drive and post em here.

Here's one result I found... very close (a few MB/sec. difference) to your results...
I need one of those 130MB/sec 1.5GB's!

My eSATA II Seagate ST310005FPA2E3-RK (1TB) averages 83.5 MB/sec

Vista 64, Core duo 2, 4GB RAM.

Is this good? I think this Hitachi drive is pretty good. It's really quiet.

This is via eSATA.

It's fine. I have a couple of Hitachi's in a RAID array in one of my boxes, and they're quite good.

Be aware, though, that the "Burst Speed" in HD Tach is not accurate, and never has been - disregard it. A better benchmarking tool is HD Tune.

Interesting. HDTach didn't show any CPU usage during it's test, but in HD Tune, it shows 100%.

Thanks for the info; I was wondering why HD Tune burst speeds seemed so much lower than HD Tach. A little 'too good to be true', eh?

Your Hitachis---what level of RAID and how many in the array? What's your average read speed and access time?

whoa! I didn't realize how old that computer was! 3 1/2 years! The drives are a couple of the earliest Hitachis - two 80G's in RAID 0.

The benchies look pretty pathetic compared to what's available now... not a bad burst rate, but otherwise - meh.

I remember being so impressed with how fast that 'puter booted, LOL!!

Things have sure changed in 3 1/2 years! I was looking for a comparison with my new setup. Thanks.

I just installed one of the new Seagate 7200.12 1TB (2 platter/500GB per platter) drives and so far, I'm quite happy. It's 102MB/sec. average read speed is a full 35 MB/sec. faster than my older 320GB 7200.10 which it replaced. In addition, it runs cool and very quiet. I know many steer away from Seagate since the firmware fiasco but I've always had good luck with them.

You should set up a RAID array with a couple of those drives.
