Re: SackOpts Enabled ProblemSorry to be OT, but to avoid confusion and bad blood, the SG tcp optimizer is really no different than Dr. tcp when it comes adjusting your tcp settings. It is a stand alone executable "program" that does not "install" itself on you computer. Simply running it does not change your computer in any way.
Yes, Dr. tcp was first and is still all that anyone likely needs to "Tweak" their tcp settings. However, because it came second, the SG tcp optimizer tried to do a little more than Dr. tcp. What would you do if you were trying to create a 'branded' program for your site?
When SG set out to create their own Tweaking program, they used Dr. tcp as the building block or cornerstone - to the point of practically borrowing the exact code (no copyrights existed, so...). They started with Dr. tcp and then added a few more bells and whistles. Reading and writing the tcp registry keys was pretty basic stuff, so that part was easy. Extracting the correct NIC data for Win95, Win98, WinNT, and WinXP was one of the biggest challenges. So we analyzed how Dr. tcp did it and, like any good knock-off, imitated the functionality as best as possible.
Then SG added a built-in "line quality tester" (Latency tab). They added an "MTU finder" (Largest MTU tab). They added a simple Bandwidth*Delay Product Calculator (BDP tab). They added the once mysterious and faux verboten "MaxConnectionsPer" settings - which everyone kept asking about anyways. They even gave you a quick view of where these setting are in your Registry (Registry tab). But that is about it. It doesn't do anything wild or crazy. It does not practice devil worship or sacrifice animals to false gods. And any settings you make can easily be reversed - they even give you a Backup option by default.
Over the years they added a little more to the Advanced tab (QoS -quality of service, etc.), but it is generally the same as it was when it was created many years ago. I do not believe it is causing the present problem that you are having. |
