| reply to Doctor Olds Re: Bell Speedstream 4200 unlock/flash questions
Well, I can't explain it, but even 1 or 2 seconds after I flash the pwd., I still can't get in through Telnet. I've tried diff. passwords and multiple times.
Perhaps there is some kind of bug? Can I assume that if 5200FTP is always accurate when it says the password was changed successsfully?

| reply to hogwild All I can say is that the program does work, but the settings change only lasts for a very short while so make your username and password very short/very easy to type. You have to be fast to get in. You can't wait or take your time typing in your commands. You should have the Telnet program ready to login so you have to only press enter.
»www.gabrielstrong.com/SpeedStrea···dme.html quote: The login/password will be reset automatically by the modem after a short while.
Tips: 1. Make sure the interface you select is the one that the modem is physically connected to. 2. Try to use an Ethernet card and not USB. 3. Shut down any programs that may be communicating with modem configurations, i.e. TangoManager, or any SNMP program. 4. Make sure to use the correct modem IP when connecting to the FTP. 5. Connect to the FTP immediately after setting the login as the login will expire after a short time. 6. Make sure to enter the MAC address in hexadecimal format, i.e. AA:FF:00:00:AA:88 7. When setting the login/password use a short one, i.e. 123/123

1 edit | reply to Doctor Olds Interestingly enough, the 5200FTP utility did not seem to work. Even though it confirmed changing of the pwd. to the one I specified, when I tried logging in via Telnet using that password immediately afterwards, I was simply prompted again for another username and pwd. I tried several times.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks |

| reply to HiVolt It does both. It is for when Telnet/FTP works, but you don't know the UN/PW or it is for when you try Telnet/FTP and it returns cannot connect errors.

| reply to Doctor Olds said by Doctor Olds :Certain what will work? The ICGabe Utility to open up Telnet/FTP for access? Yes, it works with all Speedstreams as far as I've seen. Doesn't that utility simply allow for setting a temporary user/password to access telnet or ftp? The port has to be open in the firmware regardless, as far as I can remember. -- GOLF LEAFS GOLF! |

You are certain it will work on my firmware on a 4200? I did some searching, but didn't see any indication of whether or not that's the case.

| reply to hogwild said by hogwild : "Now when you access this link you will be able to change ALL your settings on your modem." I assumed that meant that all the menus (or at Menu Headings or categories) would display in the left window pane of the web interface, without my having to create html files or similar with links to pages other than what was being displayed. After the procedure, it displays: Home User Pages Status and Statistics Tools (and all their nested menus) Is that the typical result? Yes, 100% normal. Not all pages will show up, but roughly 80% will become visible. You just have to direct access the other pages if you need them by pasting the link in your browser or saving them as bookmarks.

I cannot telnet into the modem, as suggested. When I try, I get error: "C:\WINDOWS>telnet 192.168.2.1 Connecting To 192.168.2.1...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed" Do I need to enable something in the modem, or ?? Thanks once more! hogwild You most likely will need to open the Telnet Server by using this utility that works on the 5200 and 4200.

| reply to hogwild Doctor Olds is some notorious resource on the SpeedStream around here. He's most likely the best user to ask questions about this product but i can tell you the address i TelNet to is 192.168.254.254 (using the genuine FirmWare/setup)... |

Okay, a couple of questions.
1. I assumed that when the author who wrote the text in the post on Keyboard Ninjas wrote:
"Now when you access this link you will be able to change ALL your settings on your modem."
I assumed that meant that all the menus (or at Menu Headings or categories) would display in the left window pane of the web interface, without my having to create html files or similar with links to pages other than what was being displayed. After the procedure, it displays:
Home User Pages Status and Statistics Tools

Is that the typical result? I CAN get into the other pages described by using the HTML links outside the modem in html files), on this site etc. I was just hoping for the former situation.
2. I cannot telnet into the modem, as suggested. When I try, I get error: "C:\WINDOWS>telnet 192.168.2.1 Connecting To 192.168.2.1...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed"
Do I need to enable something in the modem, or ??
Thanks once more!

| reply to Harleyguy said by Harleyguy :The document I have says "There is no firmware upgrade available for the 4200 " Does not mean that a future release might become available and delivered over night using the enabled by default CWMP agent.
Note: Don't know what document that you have, but I do know there are two 4200 designs (early revision D240 and later revision D242) and each uses a different Firmware that isn't swappable between versions.
Sympatico updated one of their 4200s at least 3 times with the CWMP agent and that shows there were different Bell Canada/Sympatico specific 4200 Firmwares at one time. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| reply to hogwild said by hogwild :Thanks for that-it worked. Just what the "Dr." ordered. A couple of follow-up questions. Will this config. stick after a factory defaults reset? I'm guessing not... Second, Can Bell upgrade the firmware now? I've called, and was told they no longer try to update 4200 modems online, but I just assumed they could be wrong/lying and that it was automated and could still happen. 1 edit | reply to hogwild First Answer is Yes it loses the changes after a reset, of course. Save the instructions to your HDD or print out to file away.
Second Answer, I Don't Know. However, you can simply disable that ability (that stops them dead) by stopping the CWMP agent.
