Blood: The Last Vampire

Based on a Yokota U.S. Air Force base in Japan ticks away from the Vietnam War, we find two communities living close together, yet separated by hundreds of yards of barbed wire. Yet something dark and foreboding is moving among the shadows, unbiasly feeding off both American and Japanese alike.

Within in the guarded walls of the base lurks evil behind the beautiful faces and quiet superstition. Vampire demons stake their claim as a mysterious, beautiful young woman makes hers against them.

Undercover and anonymous secret agents giving the orders to ensure the safety of the base, and to solidfy that this young woman remains the last original.

Animation: 10 -- Using digital and sketch together, the scenes, the backgrounds, and the action are breathtaking. Stunning paint and pencil art with touches of computer art blended in flawless moving anime canvas. Breathtaking japanimation makes for an instant classic; I don't think I have seen anything better.

Storyline: 8 -- The plot is well thought out as giving the story the days before the Vietnam conflict on a base in Japan a perfect place for chaos to erupt. The story has great direction from beginning to end. The only thing lacking is length with the complete movie running for close to 45 mins. It leaves you wanting for the sequal immediately, but that could also be a testament of how good it is.

Characters: 10 -- Saya the mysterious girl is as beautiful as she is lethal. Youki Kodoh, who debuted in Snow Falling on Cedars, does a astounding job with her voice. The secret agents that provide the orders for the demon assasin are great compliments to Saya.

Soundtrack: 10 -- The soundtrack reflects the mood and era. The musical scores are astounding mixed with such a masterpiece of art

Overall: 9.5 -- The movie is amazing and a lot of credit goes to the Hiroyuki Kitakubo for the direction in this piece. The story moves and unfolds perfectly. It was the winner of the 2001 World Animation Celebration for "Best Theatrical Feature Film" and you can see it earn its merit. This movie does raise the standard for anime and it raises it really really high. Wish it was longer, but you can not question genius. It is a must have for the anime home library.
