If you believe it's a name resolution slow down, you could try putting an lmhosts file on that machine which will pre-cache the machine name resolution. If the IP isn't static, using this approach will cause issues if the ip does change. If it is on your local segment, you can connect through broadcast; if it is on a remote segment, you need an LMHOSTS entry for it. VPN = remote segment.
