 Phone/TV/Internet service in Springfield, MO

First, I apologize for the lengthy post. Here's the backstory:

My wife and I moved to Springfield last January and we've been using Mediacom for cable, internet, and phone service. We've had a lot of problems with the phone service since we got it.

So recently we decided to change the phone number and almost immediately started getting sales calls where the callers were asking for us by name. I also started getting junkmail where my first name was misspelled (my first name is Dustin but the junkmail is addressed to Justin). That's how Mediacom has my name spelled somewhere on the account.

So my wife called them very angrily and informed them that they needed to change the number again and not charge us for it, they charge $15 to change your phone number. They advised that the account should be changed first to add whatever changes needed to be added so that the number wouldn't be sold, and then we could call back and have the phone number changed again.

We're on the 5th phone number change because they still can't get this right.

Now, for my question/problem/information request:
We're in south Springfield, near Nixa. Who else can provide all of the services? I think that we can get AT&T DSL, along with one of their bundles, but I'm not real impressed with the speeds. We're getting 10Mbps from Mediacom, I think max is 12Mbps, and I think AT&T would max out at 6Mbps.

Also, my wife says she doesn't really care about video service, we should be able to get most of our shows online. So I would be OK with just phone and internet service.

With Mediacom we're paying ~$115/mo for phone (with unlimited long distance in the US and voicemail), internet, cable, and DVR service.

Supposedly AT&T U-Verse is, or soon will be, available in Springfield.

I guess what you are saying is Mediacom is selling your information to marketers?

Another option would be to cancel their (Mediacom) phone service and sign up with a VoIP provider.

That is correct.

That's where I start to run into problems:
1. Internet speeds get cut to 8Mbps down. 8Mbps isn't bad but since I'm settling for slower speeds why not just switch to AT&T and go with 6Mbps?
2. Price goes way up. They quoted me around $80/mo if I decided to drop everything but HSI.

Now I think that would work for me. My in-laws have U-Verse in San Diego and my mother-in-law seems to be very impressed with it.
