Re: 1 computer with 6 screens /keyboards/mouses?

I use VNC all the time, but that means having a full computer in each room all on the same network.
Version 4.x of realvnc Client
Options, misc tab, Shared Connection
I have only used it with two sharing.

P.S. VNC Server running on the target system being shared can burn a lot of CPU.

those nComputing devices, how is the speed of using them ? because i've used VNC and windows Remote desktop, and most of the time they seem slow to me with delays and such

One computer for each room hooked to a network. Why trying to reinvent the wheel? Also, look at what happens if the computer that is in a locked room goes down, or someone in another room decides to do something with it elsewhere.

well, i'm looking if theres an affordable way to have computer access in 6 rooms. only need access from one room at a time.
distance computer to screen would be max 200 feet for the wires i suppose
What you are proposing... with six screens, etc ...will probably cost more than a great laptop, wireless router and a couple access points (if needed).

Nice laptop would do that for you just fine. But I see your point. You'd have to buy that switch and have lots of wire going everywhere - hope you're good at drilling. Have a vacuum handy so the wife doesn't kill you when she sees the drywall mess that you just created.

Looks like a pricey venture.

Wow....I thought that went out in the 90's. I'd only seen it once before...

The higher end looks like thin clients, though.
nComputing units work pretty well. We have some of the 'local only' and networked units. They're basically thin clients with their own 'terminal server' software.

Agreed. Why not just pick up a 2-3 year old POS laptop off of Craigslist or something?

Honestly, it sounds like you're overengineering the solution here. You don't need a monitor/keyboard in every room when a laptop with a wireless card can follow you from room to room. I'm guessing all you're looking to do is surfing/mail (?) and you don't need a super-fast laptop for that.

We use N-Computing kits in classrooms where I work...multiple users with one computer, then everyone can use it at once.

It's not a matter of running in reverse so much as having a KVM that supports a sufficient number of "control" or "master" or "user" locations.

This seems to be the lowest end Raritan switch that can do up to 8 "user" locations. (The link I gave above does not quite fit.)

What you need is similar to a KVM but backwards. Normal KVM switches are designed to take one monitor/keyboard/mouse and connect it to 6 computers, which is the opposite direction you want to go. I'm not sure electronic KVM switches can be run in reverse but there is a solution (assuming there isn't a device out there that already does this). Get some of the old rotary switch style KVM's. I don't know if they made them any larger than a 4 port variety but you can get a two port and connect it to two four port models and have essentially 8 ports available. The only downside is that these are likely PS/2 based only and may not be able to go the distance you need.

KVM over Cat 5. There are plenty of 'em.

For example, »www.raritan.com/products/analog-···sole-ii/ go up to 1,000 feet.

Not cheap of course.

Not sure that would work. How long can a PS2 cable be?

If only 1 person needs it at a time, I am thinking of wireless laptop.
