 | [TWC] Anyone have experience hosting on port 80? Hi. I just purchased a domain, and I was thinking of hosting it at home over my residential Brighthouse line. It will be a personal, non-commercial site, and my TOS is somewhat vague on whether that is allowed (it's forbidden, except as otherwise allowed).
I tried calling Brighthouse and Roadrunner to clarify whether it would be allowable, and they had no idea what I was talking about. I talked to some people who were very helpful at reading a scripted response about how to create a site on home.rr.com, but noone who understood that that had absolutely nothing to do with my scenario. I didn't get anywhere with email, either.
It's technically possible, since port 80 is open on my line and there are a plethora of dynamic DNS services that will happily point my domain to my IP, I'm just wondering if I'll get in trouble for doing so. |

I have never had any issues with that. |

 | Sorry for posting in the wrong section initially. I didn't see the Brighthouse section initially, and figured the Roadrunner forum would be appropriate since BH (at least in my area) just redistributes Roadrunner.
Bill: neat site! Realistically my site probably won't get much traffic, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. I intend to use it to host a sort of tech blog and some database apps, to learn more about web design and showcase my coding skillz to potential employers. |

 | reply to Volund Not sure if the TOS allows this without a Business account or a Static IP would be helpful. Residential doesn't come automatically with a Static IP. I know earthlink allowed this at one time. Which was a choice in Service providers. |

 | Beachie: thanks, the line you emphasized is the line I paraphrased in my OP. I'm not sure how I should interpret "expressly permitted as part of the Road Runner Service."
And I was also wondering, if it is definitely a negative, how many people get away with doing it anyway. |

| Long story short, it's against the TOS. Some folks do it anyway. Some get caught, some don't so it's up to you whether or not you want to do it. I do personally know of some that have had their service disconnected for TOS violations such as hosting a site. -- All the Way Tampa Bay! Bucs, Rays and Lightning! |

I did read it on the TOS I remember now. RR BIZ would take care of that for a few extra $$$. |

| reply to Volund I've been hosting for 7 years now, and haven't been caught or had any issues. As long as you're not using too much bandwidth, I doubt they'll care. Especially with all this FiOS competition around Tampa Bay.

 | Beachie: A personal, non-commercial site? Or do they even look? Was any warning given, or did they just wake up without internet access one day?
SurfinUSA: Unfortunately I'm unemployed right now, so I can't really afford a few extra bucks.
Dragasoni: that's cool, good to hear. I wish FiOS was available here in Indy. There is a small city in northern Indiana (where GTE's headquarters used to be before they morphed into Verizon) that has it, but not in Indianapolis. AT&T is practically giving U-Verse away here right now, though. |

| A 'personal, non-commercial site' would be something you have on home.rr.com, as you stated was explained to you by tech support in your initial post.
You would be notified of the violation of the TOS before being disconnected and given a chance to fix the situation. Really, this is your call here. -- All the Way Tampa Bay! Bucs, Rays and Lightning! |

Beachie is right, they normally would contact you for not complying with the TOS. But I can tell you that I've been doing it for 7 years without any problems. Maybe I'm lucky, not sure. I realize it's against the TOS, but I think the FiOS competition helps keep RR from bothering me.

I got an email from security because my email server had an open proxy, i fixed it and all was well. at the time (this was before working there Beachie ) I've actually called in for troubleshooting, and the guy was more concerned about me using a router than running servers. He was ready to report me and everything because I was "stealing bandwith" by using a router. (i pretty much told him if he can assure me 100% my system was secure I'd take it down, otherwise, go "tool" himself) RR knew i was running them but didnt care.
like Dragasoni they dont bother you if you're not opening up the system to problems -- | map your city | |
