Got my WZR-HP-G300NH router today and thought I'd give a few first impressions. Let me state I'm no networking guru, have no testing results to post just what I see using it today.
Have 2 desktop PCs with GB LAN NICs built-in running Win 7 RC and 1 Inspiron 8500 laptop with an Encore ENPWI-N cardbus laptop card (Ralink based) running XP Home SP3.
The Encore card works fine in the laptop. Was getting 130mbps until I changed the router to 40mhz then it went to 270 and has stayed there. Signal strength where my fiance usually sits with it (about 20ft away) is a constant Excellent. haven't tried it upstairs yet, will later (if I can get her off of it, she's loving the speed increase). Used the driver off the card's CD to get connected, ran Update Driver and got a newer version.
I did a few file transfers between the 2 desktops (using the Win 7 Homegroup) and they are faster. Have a new cable modem coming (Motorola SB6120) to take advantage of DOCSIS 3 being available here and the GB WAN in the Buffalo.
Don't have a USB NAS so I can't comment on how that works in this router.
The web interface is a bit different than the Linksys but after a few minutes of going thru it I was able to navigate and change what I wanted easily.
Got it from Newegg for $100, I think it's a bargain for the features and power it offers.

Have to say this is a great unit. My fiance's laptop for a week has stayed with Excellent signal strength and a constant 270mbs. Taking it upstairs she still gets very good to excellent and well over 220mbs.
No problems at all so far with this router.
Hooked my new SB6120 cable modem up and the web flies (have the Comcast 12mb speed, may upgrade to 16).

| I'm glad to hear good things about buffalo N router. I have their G router and feel there is none better. Haven't taken a good look at N routers yet as I am hot sure that a standard has been set, and DOCSIS3 is a ways down the road yet. I keep reading information about it here and was wondering If the N router improvements can be taken advantage of prior to DOCSIS3 access.

I just got my WZR-HP-G300NH 4 days ago, but I'm already willing to say it is one of the most reliable routers I've ever used. This is the third 802.11N router I've used.
I started with the ASUS WL-500W a few years ago. It was extremely buggy at first to the point of being almost completely unusable, but that was fixed with a firmware update after a few weeks. It bricked once during flash, ASUS replaced it, but then the replacement randomly stopped working just outside the end of the warranty. Frustrating for a $160 router.
So then I figured I just needed reliability and a replacement fast, so I went to Fry's and purchased a Dlink DIR-655 based off of a salesman's recommendation. I have to say I loved the router for a long time - before I had neighbors. It was very reliable with the 1.21 firmware, but as people starting moving into my apartment complex (it was empty when I moved in) and networks started popping up. The router couldn't cope and no matter what channel, the max throughput was about 4Mb/s. It was extremely frustrating. Finally, after the girlfriend barked at me, I broke down and got the WZR-HP-G300NH.
I didn't want to have to get a new router, and I was fully ready to turn around and sell it only worked the same as the DIR-655. Well there is no way in hell I'll be parting with this router. I get 20Mb/s to the computer furthest away from the router that previously had the most problems. Browsing is as snappy as wired connections (huge upgrade from both previous routers). What else can I say, it handles the many other networks and interference isn't really a problem on G or N (haven't tried B). UPnP works as it should
The only thing I've discovered that I would really like to see is a device name on the DHCP Lease page and perhaps an improved interface. So for $100 this router is a good value as far as I can tell. |

Non Gig (10/100/1000) - 10/100 version has New Ralink signal chipset all-in-one for both npu/wnpu found in Belkin N and some other brands. Those tend to give more problems thus the cost to make them is cheaper. Gig version of this router is better. |
