| Any Archos users out there? My iPod died...
After dying a tragic drop-from-a-high-place-to-an-unforgiving-tile-floor death, my iPod classic is in need of being replaced. I love the idea of a player that allows web-browsing, as well as high quality audio and video playback. So I checked the prices on a 32GB iPod Touch (I lke the flash storage) and was annoyed to see how much they cost.

I gotta admit, I like what I see. I use Media Monkey for my audio files, so i could care less about iTunes. The large capacity is appealing as well.
Does anyone have thoughts/opinions on the Archos vs the iPod Touch? |

| Yep I checked them out. For what i want it for, and to eschew Apple for a change, I decided to pull the trigger on the Archos 5 120GB from Newegg ($249 free ship). Hell its worth a shot. Plenty of complainers on forums but plenty of happy folks too. I'm not too hard to please and if I get a couple years of solid use I'll be very satisfied. Basically just for music, video, light web. Given that the video end will be as important as any other, I chose this device and its significant storage over a 16GB flash-based iPod touch. Guess we'll see how it goes. |

| I've got it (Archos 5 120GB) and it is impressive. Movie playback is ridiculously glorious. Web browsing seems excellent (for a PMP) to me, although I haven't done too much. I do believe this thing will be a wonderful traveling companion. |

1 edit | This (the Archos 5) is truly amazing, that's all I can say. Its flawless. Perfect audio and video streaming over my home network. Superb audio options. Video is stunning. Web browsing perfectly acceptable (you can zoom in) and displays Flash (ie, youtube). This blows my iPod Classic away and surely competes well with the iPod Touch.
I do hear that Archos' customer support is crap though. Hopefully I won't need to go there. |

| reply to Edge1 I've got a 605 30GB and 605 4GB/SD. I use it as an MP3 player while sitting at my desk or walking in the city but the real reason I bought them and where they perform amazingly well is integration wth my Dish Network DVRs.
What I can't figure out though is how to get a DVD onto it. I've got the DVD drivers (which I'm not happy about having to pay for) but can't figure out how to transfer the files from a DVD to the Archos. Anyone know how? |
