Re: Field Day!!

I won't carry on (again!) about our 2A Field day effort here in Vermont from W1NVT. Not too many changes from last year (most notably, loss of the 40M yagi on CW).

Since I'm likely not going to be employed come Field Day, I guess I'll be able to spend more time on site. But I imagine I will again be working the overnight at the phone station, between the static crashes on 75M and ghosts on 40M.

I hear ya. Last two times I was on a FD site (15 yrs ago or so), I let myself be talked into being the overnight 75m SSB guy. I think I left with a week-long headache each time...just call me a slow learner...

Late night on SSB isn't really that bad. It is a little less chaotic than during the day (especially if you are used to contesting with people who know how to operate a radio ). The rates are a little lower, and typically the operations that are still running at night time are a bit more skilled than some of the others.

The two most essential things you need to do the overnight is a thermos of coffee, and someone to take over for you when you have drank too much of the coffee.

First, congrats Burner!

As for me, I missed FD this year, as my spouse decided we should be in Florida this week. So W1NVT had to find someone else to work the overnight on SSB.

But here is this year's visit by a local news team:

Sweet, I worked your group on 15 meter SSB near the end (W6MMM, 3A, SF) .

Once I got on site and got hooked on HF, I decided to pull an all nighter. One of the other guys pretty much cleaned out 40 during the evening (I guess I got the people he couldn't get with his NVIS setup), so I spent most of the evening on 80 with some dabbling in 40. I got on 15 for a bit around sunset and it was pretty intense. I went back on it once the sun came up and stayed there until the cutoff time.

All in all I had a blast. I had a lot of contacts with the western part of the US and Canada, as well as one each in Austria and Japan. I can't wait for next year, although I'm not sure if I'll stay up all night. Being up for 33 hours straight in 105 F heat sure kicked my butt .

We used N3FJP's networkable Field Day logging software, and it worked quite well with a few laptops wirelessly connected. I've attached the contact map (need to correct it, put LA instead of LAX on one contact) QSO average graph, and the setup I was using during the night. The trailer that I operated out of most of the time had an 40/80 dipole, and a 10/15/20 rotatable beam.

Thanks for the QSO.

On SSB, we usually start the weekend on 20M, then work up to 40M and 75M after 20M goes long. On Sunday, we usually have worked out 20M, having talked to everyone on the band, so we run on 15M until the end of Field Day.

You most likely talked with Mitch, W1SJ, who was the guy wearing the "Offical Contest Shirt" in the FOX44 news piece I posted above.
