[Mp3] Ipod Classic problems

I am posting this for my husband in hopes that there will be no need to lay out much dinero for another iPod. I read through the forum as best as I could with no help so here goes a rather long one - sorry:

160 GB Ipod Classic problems:

Several weeks ago while listening to my 160 GB Ipod classic which at the time was docked in a Polk Audio I-dock II started giving me some trouble, the night I was using it was very damp and misty, I glanced over to change a song and saw the screen flicker a few times. I removed the Ipod from the dock cradle and just continued playing it through the Aux input to avoid any water vs. electric conflicts. For probably another hour, I continued playing the ipod and noticed that the battery power had dropped significantly which I found hard to believe since it had previously been charging in the dock for a few hours prior. Called it a night, turned it off and didn't’t use it for about a week.

The next week, went to use the ipod, turned it on and the screen was showing the battery with a message that said connect to power. I promptly plugged it into the computer to get the battery charged but no matter how long I left it, it still showed the message. I changed USB cables and was finally able to get it to accept a charge. Put it into my polk I-dock but noticed I was only able to control volume up and down on the docks controls, I couldn't’t go forward or back for songs and the remote did the same thing, only volume worked. I had to use the ipods control wheel to change songs which really didn't’t matter at that point as I thought maybe the battery was just to low so I left it in the dock to charge as well as play. Later that afternoon I took the ipod out of the dock, used it for about a half hour and saw the battery power was already in the red.

Spent a few hours on line researching and pretty much drew the conclusion that it was in need of a battery replacement, ordered a new battery and the accompanying tools (which are pretty much useless on the 6th gen classic) and replaced it. With the new battery in, I cycled it a couple of times then got it fully charged. Used it for about two hours then turned it off. The next morning went to use it again and the new battery was almost dead so I put it back on charge for the rest of the day. Went to use it that night, unplugged it from the computer, turned it off and shifted the hold button as I normally do, put it down on the kitchen counter temporarily and came back to see that it had turned itself on. Tried turning it off and it would come back on as soon as I let go of the button. Finally got it turned off but it would continue to turn itself back on. This is now really getting frustrating, back on line, forum after forum not getting anywhere. Apple suggested resetting the ipod which I guess is the standard text book procedure but that didn't’t work. I have now gone as far as backing up all the media and restoring the devise back to original factory spec then reinstalling all the media, the starting by itself seems to have been corrected but the battery continues to keep dying. Also went through all the settings and extras to make sure all alarms were off and any other setting that may have kept a feature running or drain on the battery

Re: [Mp3] Ipod Classic problems

Just wondering, have you tried restoring the ipod? Not sure what else you can try. Also, the 'new' battery you got, where is it from? Ebay? Sometimes these batteries you get are not good. Also, you can try setting your ipod to it's original settings. (should be somewhere in the menu)

Yep - tried restoring the with no luck.
Purchased the battery brand new from Digikey - iPod repair supplies.
Also tried setting the iPod back to it's original settings. Nothing new to report.

Re: [Mp3] Ipod Classic problems

I supposed you could try removing battery and letting it stay removed for a day or two.

That's a really odd problem. It's like it's being discharged too quickly. I am surprised that no one here has chipped in any info yet. Though you might have gotten a faulty battery from the supplier.

Re: [Mp3] Ipod Classic problems

Actually he purchased 2 batteries so I will take your advice. He will remove the current new battery, wait a couple of days and then try new battery #2.

Thanks for the advice. I hope this works.
