[DSL] Dropped connection when I pick up phone line = dead modem?

Modem: Actiontec GT701-WG
ISP: Qwest

When I pick up the phone line or, more annoyingly, when I get an incoming call, my modem has been resetting its connection. I figured it was just a bad filter, but after going through all 6 phones in the house one at a time, either all 6 filters died in the past two days or it's something else.

After performing various DSL voodoo rituals on my phone line for an hour or so while I waited on hold, the Qwest tech at least agreed with me that it was not an issue with the filters, but suggested that I try replacing the modem. My modem is out of warranty, so before I go on a fishing expedition with my wallet I'd like to hear anyone's opinion on whether a modem can be responsible for these dropped connections.

Unfortunately, my neighbors are all on cable so trying another modem without buying one doesn't seem like a possibility.

Thanks!

Yeah, the first thing I did was go through the FAQ here, but Qwest DSL and phone said there was no MTU. So, back to the original question: can the modem be causing this?

I should also mention that it was working with no problems for 3 years. The issues with dropped connections started a couple of days ago, and don't coincide with any changes to our phone/DSL/computer setup.

MTU is just one thing listed as a possibility in the FAQ. I suggest that you reread the FAQ. If you look at the FAQ and read all the supporting links you will see that the Modem is not listed as a possibility for your symptoms.

Have you tested it at the NI? I had this same problem a few months ago and replicated it at the NI. I still changed modems in case it was that, but even with the new modem it was still occurring. I am only a few hundred feet from my dslam, but after having a tech replace every other thing, he moved me to a different pair between the RT and the pedestal and it cleared my problem.
