| [POLITICS] State Finally Does something good for the people
A bill that would make Connecticut the only state requiring large employers to offer paid sick days to their workers has been endorsed by the state House of Representatives.
The House voted 88-58 after nine hours of debate Thursday on the measure, which is similar to measures that lawmakers considered in past years but did not adopt.

1 edit | reply to Kommie How is this good? When businesses can not afford to pay for vacation time, and they lay off employees to make up the difference, will you still be for it?
Businesses are closing left and right, everyone is leaving the state, and now you are celebrating more costs on these businesses that are struggling to survive?
I guess your username is appropriate. |

The boo hoo economics of 5 sick days for people don't make sense. |

That is a lot of money, and can make or break a business. |

| reply to Kommie This adds cost to doing business in our state. Though as it affects companies that employ over 50 it may be a non issue as most probably provide vacation and sick time already.
People often like to compare the U.S. to Canada, Europe, even Mexico. Claiming on alternate occasions that one of them is somehow superior. Yet the migration is from Canada, Europe and Mexico to the U.S.
I recently had a discussion with a former Mexican who was telling me how beautiful, inexpensive his former homeland was compared to America. Sigh ... -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

Think about it when is the last time you met a Danish, Swedish, or White French Immigrant?
In European Union they have 31 Sick Days, a Minimum of 20 Vacation days, and somehow they have small companies staying afloat as well as the large ones. (IKEA.STOPandShop,Nestle,Unilever,etc..)
I don't buy the argument that 5 measly sick days for people will affect the economy. |

1 edit | reply to Kommie While I like the thought of people being taken care of by their employers, legislation that increases costs to business in CT will only serve to drive even more businesses out of state, and prevent even more from coming here. Don't forget the exodus of UPS & Stanley for starters. The "state" stood by boppin' their baloneys while the two companies spent millions to leave, and thereby saved themselves money. Very little to nothing has improved since.
We had two CT tax audits in the last years of our little CT business. The first CT auditor shows up in a brand new Mercedes station wagon, and the 2nd in a brand new Lexus. At the time, I was driving a 12 year old mini van. If that were a movie, it might be funny. It wasn't and it isn't. Working xx hours per week to feed the state's number one industry - state employees and bureaucrats - was just two more nails in the coffin that drove us to close up. |

If I company is struggling, your best solution for them is to increase their fees in order to put them out of business? Wow, way to kill the American dream. That is one of the most idiotic statements I've ever heard in my entire life. |

Epiphanies are a dime a dozen among congressional Democrats as they discover urgent new reasons to experience the almost erotic pleasure of commandeering other people's money. For example, freshman Rep. Alan Grayson, a Florida Democrat whose district includes Disney World, was recently there and was inspired.
The world, he realized, would be a sweeter place if Congress mandated that all companies with 100 or more employees provide a week of paid vacation to those who work at least 25 hours a week. After three years, they would be entitled to two weeks, and companies with more than 50 employees would have to start providing a paid vacation week. Grayson would not mandate that paid vacations be spent at Disney World...
