| T1 over a short run of Cat3 cable?
Hello All,
I hope to be getting a T1 line for broadband with VOIP installed at my home office this summer. My house is wired with Cat3 cable for the phone system. Because of the way my house was built it is very difficult to gain access to the interface between the phone line coming into the house and the cat3 wiring inside the house.
Is it possible to use a phone jack close to the point at which the phone line enters the house to connect the two twisted pairs to the T1 router and then connect the remaining pair to the VOIP interface? This would save me having to remove a wall and doing lots of fishing around with cabling.

| How short (or long) of a run is it? Are you trying to route the smart jack signal over the cat3 or the ethernet side, after the router/CSU/DSU over the cat3? The smartjack signal should be OK but I wouldn't do ethernet over it. It will probably work but if it's not twisted pair cat 3 it might give problems. Actually that might give problems for the smart jack as well. Will the ISP/loop provider not drop the Smart jack where you need it? They may charge for it but it might be worth it to get it where you want it and it will be up to them to do it without damage or fixing any damage that is inevitable (such as opening up walls). |

It will be around 50 feet of cat3 cable. I'm sure I can get the provider to do all the work, but that will come at added cost... probably quite a lot. I can do most of the work myself if I know what kind of connections I need. I figure since the house is wired with cat3, I might be able to get away without doing lots of rewiring.

If you do try this, be aware that many times the in-wall phone wiring is laid down in a long loop from jack to jack inside the house. That will screw up your T1 but good. Make sure the run is direct from point A to point B and that it's not hitting any other jacks.

Andy You can transport a DS1 signal over CAT 3 up to about 250 feet without any problems, should you need to go further you will need to modify the line build out (LBO) setting on your routers CSU/DSU and the Telco must do the same for the SmartJack.

It is voice over internet, right? what's the deal with the adjacent pair? |

The Cat 3 is better then the telco twisted pair coming into your house ! Good for at least 100 Meters ( 330 Ft.)
at 1.544 Mhz (T-1)
DO NOT use the other wires in the four pair cable for your VoIP dial tone, this will cause nothing but trouble.
When your VoIP router sends a ring voltage
(95 to 105 VAC @ 20 or 30 Hz), this COULD interfere with
your T-1 , causing any number of problems, from framing errors
to clocking problems.
