Re: Good headset?

Yo Krisnatharok, it's been awhile. I'm curious about whether or not your sound issue was resolved.

I love my Razer Carcharias headset.

For $80, it's well worth it. I don't think I've ever used a headset as nice as this.

Yea your system should be beefy enough to handle the load
while in game, as well as with other tasks. Two things I may conclude with:

1) You could check bios setting to see whether your on-board sound is set properly. It may in fact be set for off board sound (hardware) or even a lower codec value. Assuming you didn't build the PC, after buying it without a hardware soundcard, I would think the factory setting by default was for software sound. But what the heck, check it anyway.

2) In an earlier post you wondered whether Your MOBO has shoddy audio. You might not be far off with that Assessment.

Your motherboard uses what's called digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion or, a "codec" chip. (the PC is digital your headset/speakers are analog) the quality of analog audio depends on the quality of the codec used on the motherboard.

Generally hardware sound cards offer a higher codec value than motherboards offer. As well as full duplex 24 bit sound resolution, higher sampling rates, higher signal to noise ratios. Personally I would never use my MOBO for sound.

One other thing you should check in your in-game setting, under "sound", if there is on fact a setting for this (BF2 has one); check to make sure your settings are for software or hardware sound.

Again, on-board MOBO sound = software. Add on soundcard = hardware.
That's what I was commenting on--the in-game setting shouldn't affect how my voice sounds over Vent. I'll check Vent quality without WoW running. I'm running an i7 920 with 6GB ram, and assumed I'd have the cycles to run voice through the CPU. I'll check out the Creative Labs card you linked.

I think you may be missing my point. I use Ventrilo in game as well. My hardware soundcard drives both game sounds and Vent. Your onboard software sound runs both Vent and the game sounds. You are using CPU cycles to drive sound tasks. Your game demands may be taking precedence over your sound demands.

Question: Does your voice fade out when you're not in a game?

As for dropping money you now have a great new mic/headset with the old unit as a back up. You should consider that even an inexpensive (under $30*) add-on sound card moves the sound tasks to that device not to your CPU.

Anyway good luck to you. You're doing the right thing by asking around. I know how frustrating sound and graphics issues can be.

I am not using a game for voicechat, I use vent. I'll doublecheck my settings and maybe post on the EVGA forums before I drop money. Thanks for the help!

Indeed so. I'm assuming from your last post, you are using on-board (software) sound. The PCI (hardware) card would most certainly help, and most likely end your problem. Here's how it works; Your onboard software sound works off CPU cycles. Adding a hardware soundcard frees up your CPU from sound tasks. This would be most critical during a game.

One other thing you should check in your in-game setting, under "sound", if there is on fact a setting for this (BF2 has one); check to make sure your settings are for software or hardware sound.

Again, on-board MOBO sound = software. Add on soundcard = hardware.

OK so I got the new Zalman clip and the quality is crystal clear.... but it still fades if I talk longer than 1.5 seconds.

I boosted the input by +20dB as you suggested with no luck. Is it possible that my mobo just has shoddy audio? Do you think a PCI soundcard would fix the issue?

I've been told by my guildies that my $20 head/mic-set sucks ass and I've been told to buy a new pair that has a decent mic that does not fade out.
I've never had a cheap mic fade on me, they just stop working after awhile as do the more expensive ones. Before you buy a new mic/headset check to see if you have mic-boost turned on.

-go to control panel, Sound and audio devices, Volume, advanced, then under Microphone clic; advanced, then check the +20dB boost.

I ordered the Zalman clip mic to replace the mic boom on my headset... will let you know how it sounds when it comes in this week.
The quality on that mic is actually really really good 5/5 stars. I used to use that until I got my new headset.

I use a Platronics headset (think it's the 777 without the USB adapter) »www.amazon.com/Plantronics-GameC···e_a_smtd

When I need a headset. Output sound quality is fine, not great, I like how the mic goes back into the headset, and to me, it's very comfortable.

Though, I should pick up a mic and just use it with my Audio Technicas or Yuins, but the Plantronics work just fine.

i dont care how i sound to others as long as i dont sound like a wind tunnel. get a great set of headphones and a random stand mic. better audio is way better than voice quality when you dont have to listen to yourself!

I am using Logitech Premium Headset. They are very comfortable and don't give you headset hair. You can pick it up at any Wal-Mart or get it cheaper on line.

Edit: Now that I think about your comment from your friends. Does your sound card support mic boost?

I like them and they do sound good and $80.00 is not bad at all for what the head set will do.

I have an Icemat Siberia I got for cheap on sale from buy.com, that took 2 months to get, BTW.

It has decent sound but I don't like clip on mics.
