My IE6 browser just got hijacked by Microsoft's new web browser, "Bing". Google is my default, and typing into the Google search bar now brings up MS's Bing search engine.  There is no option on the Bing site to opt-out, or turn it off. Apparently, Microsoft is aware of the problem and they recommend IE6 users upgrade to IE7 or IE8.

The following is only a temporary fix, as it only works in Google's Toolbar. It DOES NOT work when searching from IE6's Address bar.
In IE6, go to your menu bar:
Tools
-->Internet Options
---->Security
------>Restricted Sites
Add "www.bing.com" and "bing.com" to your list of "Restricted sites".

IE6 is very important. Slashdot.org has a discussion today that claims that IE6 is the undisputed champion when it comes to corporate computers.
I know this to be true in many large organizations. The main reason for this is that one or more mission critical web based applications still need IE6 for compatibility. Upgrades are available, but the pricetag is high.

Ahh, I see. You have RDRAM which is obsolete and pricey. Thanks for the reply!
You may be able to find a cheap motherboard and ram for it though! Just a happier thought!

A lot of corporate environments still use IE 6... mine included. We got hosed by this, too.
Shame on MS for this one.
I never use that search button in IE, I just head straight to the search engine of my choice. But for those who use it, they were not impressed... |

Yeah, some people can't really upgrade their computers because of how outdated they are. And, as you noticed, that kind of RAM costs tons more than the more modern RAM. I myself primarily used a PC from the end of 2001 that used PC133 RAM. Just about a week ago I purchased and built a new PC (and I was surprised about the price of RAM for it: $50 for 4 GB!). But I guess the older RAM costs more because it's still in high demand.
As for IE6, I was using Firefox, but sometimes used IE6 for when I needed to easily extract files from its cache (which it collected from webpages). I still have my old PC hooked up for those occasions. |
