[Modem] Netopia 3347 AT&T FW upgraded to 7.8.1R2. How?

Okay, so I have a Netopia 3347-02 (AT&T) that was working great. It still works great, but lately I've been seeing it disconnect way more than usual. It used to be maybe once every 3-4 weeks and now it's about once or twice a day.

So I decided to log into the router and make sure everything is okay. First thing I notice was the Netopia logo was changed to a Motorola logo. Also the footer used to say (c) 2006 Netopia, and now it says (c) 2008 Motorola, Inc. I check to see the firmware and it's up to 7.8.1 R2. I check Netopia/Motorola's site and it says that the latest firmware is 7.6.1 R9. I start talking with a Motorola eAgent, and he says that the latest they have is the 7.6.1R9. I asked him if an ISP can push a firmware upgrade, and he says that it is possible but it's rarely done.

I check AT&T's site and the latest FW upgrades they have is 7.6.0R8. Of course their drivers site looks really old, so I'm guessing they haven't updated it in a long time.

What I want to know is if anyone with a Netopia 3347-02 with AT&T has seen this new firmware 7.8.1R2. I searched everywhere for that upgrade and it seems that no one has seen it. Most users, if not all, have the 7.6.1 upgrade. And if this is a legitimate upgrade, how did it happen? I never used the upgrade firmware feature on the router and the calendar settings have the router check for firmware upgrades only once a month, but does mean that the firmware will install itself?

I'm slowly getting annoyed at the disconnects and I have a feeling that it's from the upgrade. So if anyone can shed some light into what might have happened, please let me know. Thanks!

Motorola Firmware Repository

»att-training.net/firmware.html

There are some errors on the Motorola Firmware Repository page.

The first modem it shows firmware for is called a 3347-02-006 and there is no 3347-02-006. It is the 3347-02-1006.

They have totally forgot about the 3347-02-1002 modem.

It shows firmware 7.6.1r9 for the 3347-02-1022 modem but when you go to download that firmware it is really firmware version 7.8.1r2 instead of firmware version 7.6.1r9.

There is a 7.8.1r2 firmware for an AT&T version Motorola Netopia 3347-02 Series ADSL2+ Wireless Gateway.

There is more then one AT&T version Motorola Netopia 3347-02 Series ADSL2+ Wireless Gateway.

As far as I know only one of them is for the AT&T Southeast region for use with AT&T FastAccess DSL.

Where did you get yours?

Which model Motorola Netopia 3347-02 Series ADSL2+ Wireless Gateway do you have?

There is a label on the bottom of the unit and there is another small white label on top of that label. This small white label will have the full model number on it. The 3347-02 part is common to all but the last part of the model number sets them apart.

3347-02-1002 = Not for FastAccess DSL.
3347-02-1002K = Not for FastAccess DSL.
3347-02-1006 = For FastAccess DSL.
3347-02-1006L = For FastAccess DSL
3347-02-1022 = I don't really know about this model. I have never heard of it or have seen one. I don't think it is for FastAccess DSL though. This is the one that uses the 7.8.1r2 firmware.

.

I had something else to say but I have to go now.

I think that maybe you bought a modem off Ebay or from the AT&T Store and you have the wrong one for FastAccess DSL. Could be that you have the right modem for FastAccess DSL but somehow the wrong firmware is on it now.

It should not really matter which one you have as either should work just fine.

You probably have some kind of wiring issue that is causing your modem to lose sync a lot. I don't know how the GUI is laid out on your modem with that firmware but somewhere it should show the DSL Statistics. You need to find them and post them up for us to look at.

@bellsouth.net

I took a look at the router and it says 3347-02-1006L. I got this one from an AT&T Tech that came to my house to check an issue I was having with the Westell modems. I went through 2 Westells and was getting numerous disconnects anytime a thunderstorm was coming close or there was lightning a few miles away. I tried the 2Wire and 2x Westell modems and got fed up with the disconnects. He checked the wiring and found nothing that could cause these problems. Then I told him that I have been doing some research (from DSLReports) and some people said that the Netopia business routers helped them with the disconnects. He said we can try it, so he went to the van and got me one. That was about a year ago and it's been smooth sailing for me. This past week, the disconnects started again. I just contacted AT&T and they said they were having some issues with the network in my area, so I don't think it's something on my end.

Anyway, I still don't know how I got the new firmware. I was hoping someone else knew. I was going to try to download the older 7.6.1 firmware from Motorola and try to set it up to where it would check for the 7.8.1R2 upgrade the next day and see if it installs itself. The only reason I think this happened is because my router restarted it self a few days ago at 5AM and that was the date and time it was supposed to check for an update.

Also is this the DSL Statistics you need?

Thank you for all the help. I really appreciate it!

Look what I found.

Normally I disable the automatic firmware update feature on my Netopias. This is my newest one at my newest location and I must have forgot to do it. I have been burned before by the automatic update causing my custom settings to be erased. This one has a simple single static IP address with a couple of pinholes and the update did not knock out my settings.

This appears to be a proper firmware update for FastAccess DSL.

.

It shows more detailed information when I telnet into it with the new firmware than it did with the older firmware.

I'm working on one of my old cars and it is not going to fix it self so I need to get back out there and get to work on it.

Talk to you later on.

I appreciate you looking into this and that I'm not not the only one with the new firmware. I didn't know it was all automatic. I went through the settings and disabled it for now.

Thanks!

Also, forgot to ask if you had a chance to look at my statistics. They look similar to yours except with the Upstream Output Power. Mine is at 0.17 dBm and yours at 11.78 dBm.

Hope you get your car fixed and thanks again!

I allowed my netopia to update its firmware today. I'll let ya'll know if I have any problems with it. I like the extra line stats that we can see now but I don't know what they all mean.

Here's why my connection is so good:
Estimated loop length: 1896 feet (straight loop)

Don't make me come down there and adjust your wire pairs.
