SS5200 - administration connectivity issues

I've unlocked and upgraded the firmware on my SS5200. I had set it up as a backup to replace my current modem in case something happened. This was a few months ago.

I can no longer connect to it. I've reset the modem which still hasn't let me connect to it.

I've tried setting up various TCP/IP settings in all of the cases, it doesn't find »speedstream nor does it find 192.168.254.254 or any other combination I've found.

To reset it you have to hold the reset for longer than 4 seconds (just clicking it does nothing), but not longer than 10 seconds as that cancels the reset. When you see the Pwr LED flash red/green is when you let go.

Then you must be directly connected to the Modem with your PC setup for DHCP. Type in an open DOS Command Box "ipconfig" minus the quotes and read what the Default Gateway IP is listed there for the Ethernet adapter. Now type that IP into your Browser.

That's what the problem is, I don't get assigned an IP or gateway.

What error message or what IP info do you get when you release and renew the DHCP lease using ipconfig?

You are hooked to the Modem direct with a single PC, you are not using a PPPoE Broadband Icon to dial out, correct? When you plugged in the Ethernet cable the LED for Ethernet and the LED on the PC back both lit up, correct?

In a DOS Command Box type "ipconfig /release" then wait 5 seconds ..... then type "ipconfig /renew" now type "ipconfig /all" and post the results.

I get a default IP assigned 169.x.x.x (something like that)

Yeah, hooked up directly. The Ethernet light is on and blinks whenever I try to access »speedstream.

I've tried this but it seems to hang. After a while, I close out the DOS window and get 0.0.0.0 assigned.

You should only see zeroes when you press enter after the "ipconfig /release" command as the images show above. They should not be a result after "ipconfig /renew" command.

Your LAN settings should be double-checked and verified to match the two last images above.

You didn't post the output from your "ipconfig /all" command. Still need to see those results. You can use XXXs for the Computer Name and for the MAC ID for your privacy.

Try resetting the Modem again making sure to follow the steps here:

I was waiting too long before releasing the button.

When it blinks, release. It works! Thanks.

On a side note, it's shame that one cannot run in bridge mode and keep the admin console

You are Welcome! Glad that it turned out to be an easy fix.

The 5200 can be setup just like the 4200 Bell FAQ shows (it is seen in the Log as "Current Mode: Bridge-Router"), then you would need to know how to/have hardware capable of adding a Static Route to the Private LAN IP (aka »192.168.254.254 or whatever the LAN IP is for your 5200) and allow it out of your chosen hardware on the WAN Interface. There are some consumer class Routers that cannot do this, so verify the capabilities of any Router before purchase.

I'm thinking my Tomato MLPPP setup can do this as it's doing this using my current DLink 2320B. My LAN (10.x.x.x) and modem IP (192.168.x.x) are different.

I'm able to log in and see the stats of my ADSL connection and keep the benefits of MLPPP.
