| changing MAC = fixed service?
I use Telus for Internet and Telus Digital phone.
Late last week my Telus Digital phone stopped working and the VOIP light on the ATA was blinking constantly. Telus had no idea what the problem was and 4 days later I still had no dial tone. Telus techs do not seem to care about a non-functional phone line if you are with their VOIP service.
I noticed that generic Internet download speed seemed slow and I confirmed this at speedtest where I got a measly 500 Kb/s download. I had already been power cycling all my equipment constantly as part of debugging the non-functional Telus Digital Phone so obviously rebooting wasn't going to change anything.
I went into my router config and changed the MAC to a new random one. Bingo, download speed is restored to 2600 Kb/s and the ATA is now working.
4 days of pain and suffering all fixed by a MAC change. Does Telus have some kind of MAC "craplist" where they intentionally throttle service? Speaking of throttling, I want to throttle someone at Telus. This situation has been a huge waste of my time. |

What happened?? |

Download Speed: 431 kbps (53.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 807 kbps (100.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Nothing else is running on this connection! Anyone have any ideas? |

[/BQUOTE :Changing the MAC address forces the DHCP server to issue a new IP address assignment. However, you should not use a random number, as there is a possibility that it could conflict with someone already using that number. Use a MAC address that you know does not exist on that network, like the MAC address of your PC. That way, you can connect your computer directly to the modem in order to test that the problem is not in your router. |

The only way there would be a problem is if I accidentally picked the MAC of the Telus gateway. The chance of that happening is 1 in 281,474,976,710,656. |

The MAC address is a unique number that is used by broadcast packets to identify where the packet originates from on a LAN. The DHCP service for example uses the MAC address to assign and index an IP address assignment. The DHCP service must know the physical location of an IP address in order to route the packets correctly. Since the ADSL network is nothing more than a very large virtual LAN, two identical MAC addresses could confuse the hell out of such a service. |

| reply to ZeekWatson There are thousands, almost, reasons why your internet is slow... ...everything from an alarm system, cable trouble, bad drop, bad modem, bad port, etc, etc... If you want help, call Telus for a service call and get the tech to check all of the above... |

| reply to ZeekWatson I find sometimes I can't load web pages like Ebay and any other random pages.
I release my ip and renew it with a new one and the pages load quickly.
Sometimes I can't renew the IP, like they are getting tight on IP's.
So changing the MAC works.
Lately it's been getting stingy for IP's and "Log in TELUS Device and IP Registration" is not working, which is what I googled to find this. |

You could be going through a diff ERX when u change ur IP Each customer's DSLAM is mapped to a specific Vlan on a specific ERX. Changing an IP wouldn't change the ERX. It may change the specific route deeper in depending on how the routing tables are set up though. -- the opinions expressed herein are my own and do not represent my employer in any way |

| It would not by default change the ERX assignment, but if you're having issues with your IP assignment, call in. The DHCP/MAC registration system may not be properly synchronizing your account, causing issues.
Also, we're way off from exhausting our pool of IPs. Yes IPv6 is coming, but you'll hear about the transition long before it gets that desparate... -- My opinions are my own and are not necessarily those of my employer. |

| reply to ZeekWatson Just to follow up ...
Telus came over to my house without calling 30 minutes before like they said they would so I wasn't there, hence this report is second hand.
The Telus tech poked around outside for a minute, came into the house, looked at my router which was disconnected, off, and bypassed as per Telus troubleshooting instructions. He said "Here is the problem! The router is setup wrong!" and moved one of the cables to the empty WAN port. Then immediately left.
When I came home later the modem still losing its connection and resyncing every 30 seconds or so. I called Telus and asked what the tech found, but the agent was unable to tell me anything. He did schedule another service call.
However the Telus tech never showed up and the problem mysteriously fixed itself. While I'm happy the problem is fixed I'm disappointed that Telus provided no communication on what was done, and furthermore, the two week turnaround was unacceptable. |

| It hard, usually impossible for me to actually call ahead 30 minutes for the appointment. If anything, I have a window of 10-15 minutes.
If the tech didn't show up the second time, it's likely an outside plant issue that was causing issues. I'm sorry about the first one, was he a contractor by chance? |
