However, if there happened to be any problems with compatibility, Win 7 will have an available xp mode (virtual machine).
I think that is only available in Win 7 Pro and Bus and Ultimate. I think they are removing XP support in Win 7 Starter/Home/Prem.

Pre order Windows 7 Pro (which has XP Virtualization) for $99 from MS, if games don't work under W7 they'll work under XP.

I have the Windows 7 64 bit RC and it also runs Windows XP in a MS virtual machine. Most stuff seems to run under Windows 7, there is an XP SP 3 compatibility mode which can be set for .exe files.

if your messing with DOS/3.11 stuff then DOSBox FTW
for 9x stuff just use vmware or some thing most of that was stuff that wont run on XP was all FMV stuff any way that didnt really need a 3d card any way

and most early GLIDE games can be run with a GLIDE wraper

Hmmm... no idea. If it requires DOS, then I think you'd be SOL without some kind of tool.

One thing you could try doing is if you still have older Windows/DOS setup disks and the games don't specifically require a GPU, get VirtualPC and run them within the virtual machine.
Nope. That won't work. Tried it. (I was told it wouldn't, but had to try anyway). Something to do with the fact that the Virtual PC doesn't share virtual memory with the video card, or something a bit too over my head, technically speaking). I tried to download drivers to the XP Virtualization, no luck. I already had drivers loaded, but.....
As I said, it only works if the game doesn't require a GPU. VirtualPC only emulated some basic display card; probably not much better than intel GMA.

Given the nature of most DOS games though, that shouldn't be a problem.

pretty much if it can run on vista it will run on win7 since win7 is based off vista with only minor differences.
It's much more than "minor differences". Having said that, the game should work. However, if there happened to be any problems with compatibility, Win 7 will have an available xp mode (virtual machine).

There's a chance SOME games will work.

I have over 150 games I have never had time to play. One of them is Star Wars Empire at War, and the expansion pack, SW E@W: Forces of Corruption. According to the Vista compatibility pages on microsoft's website, BOTH the game and expansion pack are Vista compatible in both 32 and 64 bit varities. LIES! While the game itself is, Forces of Corruption is not! (in 64 bit).
Supposedly, there is a work-around in the 32-bit version.

Now, I said, "there's a chance SOME games will work". basically, if it does not work in Vista, it won't work with 7. Application software will probably fare better, if you get a business version of 7. You'll have to download Virtual PC and then XP Virtualization. Again, games probably won't benefit from this, but, I had some legacy Bible programs that loaded with ease, that wouldn't in Vista-64 bit.
What I will be doing is buying a system with Home Premium 32-bit edition; unless I find a business version for about the same price. More older games will work in the 32-bit environment than in the 64-bit environment.
If it works in Vista, it should be ok in 7. Perhaps a few problems.

DOSbox for dos games

other games, who knows. best bet might be virtual software that supports GPU rendering and then install Win 98 on it. Anything that runs on XP should run on W7 no problem tho there will prolly be some exceptions (and some workarounds)
