trying to connect to a server running in network from in met

ok i'm trying to operate a private game server on my home network ... i am using a 2wire 2701hg-b dslmodem/wireless router... I have teh required ports forwared for the server access and anyone that logs onto the server form outside my network can connect... however if you attempt to connect to the server from within the network it sticks in the login server for the game server i ahve set up.... is there a router setting i need to change for allowing access to the game server from computers already on the router's network or what... i'm compltely stumped.. i Don't understand how the server can only be accessed from outside the network and not within... any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds as though you may have a public IP loopback problem. One way to determine if internal machines are not looping back properly through your public IP via the 2Wire is to see if you can make a direct connection. Can you reach the game server from another local machine by using the game server's LAN address (for example, 192.168.1.x) instead of your public address? If you can, then that may be good enough. If it isn't, you'll have to look at the 2Wire's settings to see if there are any explicit loopback options which can be adjusted.

Good luck.

Ok .. I tried to connect to the game server using the local ip of the other machine and am able to connect to the login server we have established... however it still will not connect to the game server itself... it sticks on the screen stating "Logging in to Game Server", and never goes any further.. I tried looking at the 2wires settings and there is not a single setting that has anything to do with loopbacks or the like... that was my first thought was it is a loopback issue and i still think it is because the only way i can even connect to the login server is to put the ip of the local machine ... everyone else that connects to the server uses the ip of the router and has no problem connecting as long as they are outside the network... If anyone has any clue about what the loopback issue could possibly be then please let me know im game to try anything tired of being frustrated by this

The 2701HG-B (from its logs) appears to be running a variation of Linux, which by default does not trust private IP's coming in through its public interface (as possibly spoofed). So by default it will not do LAN2LAN via WAN IP.

You could try adding a name for the local private IP of the game server in the HOSTS file of the local PC trying to connect to it. But you have to make sure it is a "HOSTS" file (capitalization does not matter in Windows) and not HOSTS.SAM (which is just an example) or any other filename extension. You should set windows to NOT hide known files extensions. If you edit the hosts file in Notepad, you may need to rename the file from hosts.txt to hosts (no file extension).

But if the game client uses DNS only instead of HOSTS first you might still have an issue.

weve tried the host file thing ... just found a forum talking about this and it still doesn't work....SO if i were to use a different router for example... A linksys wireless-g broadband router, model# wrt54g... would this resolve the issue or do any routers allow public ip loopback.. and if the router i just listed does allow loopback would it work if the router was connected through the 2701hg-b just acting solely as a modem?
I am so frustrated right now... i have a game server that anyone else can get on but i cant get on to administrate

If you are getting to the login for the game server the problem must be the game server. If the 2wire was the problem you would not get the login prompt.

SO the game server does not allow acces from a public ip loopback but does allow acces from an external ip.... strange... is there a way to resolve this issue or am i stuck?
i can't understand how this would happen... how are you supposed to admin a game server if you can't acces it from the network its running on when it's live on the net... you can access the game server form the machine that its running on, if its not live, but you can't access the game server from other systems on the same network wheter it's live or not... so frustrated to be this close to running this thing and being stuck now...

I think the problem is with the game server configuration.

Start trouble shooting at the game server

kk thanks we just tested something and with the server running when i attempt to connect it shows me connected to the server however on my end it sticks at "Logging in to Game Server" ... So this seems like im stuck with dealing with the admins for the server program that we are running that won't answer any of our questions we post... they answer every other question on the forum except for the questions we post... i'm so damned frustrated right now.....ughh!!!!!!

It may be something simple that you have overlooked, go over the server configuration carefully
