Trying to use Bridged 2701HG-B with Apple Time Capsule

I currently have an Apple Time Capsule connected as a client wirelessly to my 2wire2701HG-B which is in router mode. So the Time Capsule is not acting as router, it's just there as a wireless disk I can use as backup. Of course, this limits the speed at which I can back up my computer on my wireless network, since the 2wire is only g speed, where as the Time Capsule operates at n speeds.

So.... I would like to try and turn my 2wire into bridged mode so it acts exclusively as a modem, and make my Time Capsule the main router.

I've followed the faq from this website: »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Bridge Mode for the 2Wire 2701HG-B but so far I've been unsuccessful at getting it to work.

I have a couple questions if you guys wouldn't mind hearing me out:

1. The FAQ says to change the VPI and VCL to 8 and 35 respectively. As a default, my VPI is set to 0 and VCL 35. Should I still change the VPI to 8? I changed it, but of course I don't know if that's the reason why things aren't working.

2. Where it asks Connection Type on the 2wire admin stage, I kept it as Direct IP (DHCP or Static). So when I'm going through the Apple Airport Utility to reconfigure up my Time Capsule, I should choose DHCP, yes? I wasn't sure if I should try using PPPoE on both ends and entering my AT&T login information etc. I stuck with DHCP on the Time Capsule and DirectIP on the 2wire, and still, no luck.

3. The ethernet cable connecting the 2wire and the Time Capsule can be plugged into any of the 4 "ethernet out" ports on the 2wire, correct? And additionally, that cord should be plugged into the "internet in" port on the Time Capsule, right?

I've done everything else the FAQ says to do, including unchecking the enable routing box on the Configure services page. I just don't know where I'm screwing up, and whether it's on the 2wire end or the Time Capsule end.

Thanks everyone!

Ben

You could have just disabled the wifi on the 2wire...........

1. the vpi/vci for your area is 0/35
2. the Time Capsule must be set for PPPoE using AT&T login info
3. any port on the 2wire, the wan port on the Time Capsule

When the 2wire is in bridge mode the wifi radio is on if you don't plan on using the 2wire wifi you may want to turn it off

Thank you for the tips. I will try that when I get home. But in response to your first comment that I could have just disabled wifi on the 2wire, I was told that just doing that would cause a lot of mixups, because if the 2wire AND the Time Capsule are both in "router mode" (excuse my laymam's terms) then they would both be trying to assign IP's and do whatever routers do, and that would cause a bunch of errors as they would conflict with each other.

And per your suggestion, I will definitely set the Time Capsule up in PPPoE mode, but in the 2wire setup, do I select Direct IP (DHCP or Static) as the FAQ suggests, or should I also select PPPoE as well?

Thanks

Ben

You can only have one device doing the PPPoE and "other" router tasks.
And it's possible to connect the time capsule to a ethernet network that already has internet access,

You must make the selection for "Direct IP (DHCP or Static)" to put the 2wire in bridge mode

you have to go to the 192.168.1.x/mdc or /maintenance page and in Broadband link/configure make it to direct ip

then go to advanced/services and uncheck routing

i am running an airport extreme n as router over a 2wire 2701hgt in bridge mode and it works flawlessly!
