Nero and UltraISO tell me i have no rights to burn to disk?!

Win XP Pro SP3 is the OS.
I tried to update the drivers of the CD/DVD drive,
It tells me none are available.

There is also no ! sign in the Device Manager tab, and it tells me the hardware of the DVD drive is working properly.
It can read cd's and DVD's, just cant write to them.

I tried Nero, Ashampoo burner, and other applications.
Dosent work.
Nero tells me i need 'burn rights'. I installed the application, and set it to 'everybody has permission'. still no luck.

I dont know how to fix this, please help.

As the above pic shows, i tried that method, but i dont have those registry keys?!

This is what i have.
(The no autorun probably refers to my using a reg entry to disable autorun, and i dont think thats the problem, cause i've been using that fix for like a year)

There is no "recording tab" so Windows does not recognize the drive as a burner.

It's possible third party recording software also do not recognize the drive.

When did this problem start and did it coincide with any change in the system such as installing new software?

Also, can you uninstall the drive via the Device Manager, restart the computer, and let Windows re-detect the drive and see if that makes a difference.

You know, edit the registry, log on as Bill Gates, whatever...

I gave up on UltraISO and just use Image Burn, it is old, it is free and it works. I could never get UltraISO to recognize my DVD burner.

So to hell with crappy software, just get one that works... If that isn't Nero, or UltraISO, then there are about a dozen more free ones to try...

OTOH, if you have Nero Burning Rights installed, you probably cannot use Nero without being a limited user, as admin you have no rights to elevate, so the Nero Burning Rights program might be poorly written and not understand you are admin, only that it (the software) cannot elevate rights for the logged on user.

What version of Nero did you try? The last good version is version 6. On my XP, Nero is the ONLY burner that works properly. I got weird errors and lots of coasters with every other burner I tried. I have never heard of "Burn Rights" by Nero ...that must be some of the junk they have come up with since version 6. You can still get ver 6 at oldversions.com.

Did you try Alcohol 120? That and Nero 6 and below usually work on XP when nothing else will.

Well i did install SP3 on this Laptop a week ago....damn it...
i think that could be it, heck i've tried everything else.
Did the uninstall of the driver of the DVD drive, and 'scanned for hardware changes' to get it working again, same problem.
i dont want to revert back to SP2,
but looks like i have no other option left to try.

@Mele20
Oh the best version for my simple DVD burning needs is 6.6.0.15.
If i remember correctly (which i dont), shortly after i installed SP3, the popup for 'burn rights' came up.
I have tried many burning software, i even installed .NET framework 2.0 for CDburnerXP to work, but still nothing.

Edit: i will check out Alcohol 120%

You make me glad that I never have upgraded to SP3. I haven't because I have been afraid of some weird problem like yours happening. My computer was 3 years old in February and I can't see upgrading the service pack on one that old and as heavily used as mine with lots of software installed/uninstalled, Microsoft virtual machines installed, VMWare virtual machines installed, etc.

Can't you just uninstall SP3? I upgraded a virtual machine to SP3 a long time ago, used it for awhile, and then uninstalled it.

edit: I have 6.6.0.16. It has NEVER made a coaster. Every other burning program I tried made lots of coasters and some wouldn't work at all especially burning an ISO. Only Nero can burn an ISO with no problems (and on the first try). Sonic came on this computer and it was the worst of all and very difficult to remove. Nero crashed when I first got it because there were bits of Sonic still on the computer. I can't say enough good things about Nero 6 and XP. But if Nero said you needed that Burning Rights thingy after you installed SP3...I am not EVER going near SP3!

After a little searching it seems a few people have encountered a similar problem after installing SP3 on their machines.
The only solution seems to be reverting to SP2.
But then again, many hundreds of thousands have probably upgraded without any such issues.
Im just not one of them!
Maybe its that particular driver of my DVD writer which is incompatible with SP3 for whatever reason.
In that case, i have to revert to SP2.
Ofcourse im assuming when i do that, all will be well!
So thats on the to-do list this weekend.

Hi,

I know that your fix worked for over a year, But have you tried to burn without the fix? A shot in the dark...

I myself have switched to Ashampoo 2009 and studio 8 with no problems on two laptops and two desktops all with SP3.

Yea, I'm a little curious about that myself.
You should be able to uninstall SP3 via Add/Remove (if you think SP3 is indeed the problem), so I'm wondering why you're looking for a SP2 download. (Remove SP3 for now, and see if that corrects the problem).

Anyway, for what it's worth, I've installed SP3 on several XP machines (quite a while ago), and never had a single problem with any of my burning software...and that includes quite a few of them depending on the machine....Nero, Ashampoo, NTI CD Maker Gold, ImgBurn, etc.

Not to mention a bunch of different hardware. (Guess I'm one of the lucky ones).

There are a few things you can consider trying before reverting back to SP2.

The first thing I would suggest is the registry fix in the following MS KB article:

»support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Removing the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values, if they exist, at the named registry key may prevent an incompatible third party driver for the drive from loading.

If i uninstall SP3 then i will be left with only Xp Pro, without any service packs, right?
Or will it automatically go back to Win Xp SP2?
I got the SP2 installer from MS, 272MB.

@auggy
I tried the fixit provided by MS.
Didnt work, unfortunately.

Umm, should i backup my data before i do this?

EDIT: uninstalled SP3, automatically went back to SP2, so thats good. What sucks though is i am STILL getting the bloody error.

Can you double-click the drive in the Device Manager > Driver.

What is the "Driver Date" and "Driver Version"?

If you click on "Driver Details" what is listed under "Driver files"?

Can you click on "Driver Details" under the "Driver" tab to get a list of drivers for the drive (cdrom.sys, etc.)

Also, can you check the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

Expand "Drives" and click on "Volume".

In the right window what is "Value data" for "Drive Type"?
