[Speed Problem] DSL Extreme 6.0 -- Extremely slow at night...

The internet connection is usually fine during the morning and afternoon, but at night my pings in games are ridiculously random and high and the speeds start capping out at around 200 to 240 kB/s (less than 2Mbit). Anyone have any ideas what's going on?

I'd suggest posting your line stats here for everyone to take a look at. Preferably you should post some stats from daytime usage when everything is normal then stats from nighttime when you're having your problems.

Do you have any appliances that turn on at night that might be causing noise on the line?

I have the 6.0 service too and until about the last month or so it was pretty close to that speed. If I use their website to test my speed it shows that I get nearly 6.0mb but testing from anywhere else I'm lucky if it hits 2.0. It shows as I used to be able to watch streaming video from the various sites like Hulu and Fancast etc but now it cannot keep up with the stream.

I'm getting ready to cancel the service with them as I'm not too keen on paying for service I don't get. Guess I'll switch over to the Comcast Fastest/Fast service.

How do i get the line stats?

Nothing turns on at night, only off .

I called AT&T during the day today (few hours ago) and currently the speed is... acceptable and they didn't see anything wrong from their end. They told me to call while the service is acting up again, so chances are I'll call them again in a few hours.

There is a published FAQ for just about everything:

Just talked to tech support on the phone...

they accidentally hung up on me 2 times in a row...

I'll try again tomorrow if I'm in the mood, but I'm starting to get fed up with AT&T.

I'll try getting the line stats.

I'm having a similar problem with my DSL Extreme service, and it also seems to occur at night. Upload speeds seem consistently okay, but in the late evening download speeds become inconsistent and slow (ranging from 1Mbit to barely 2Mbits).

I first noticed the problem maybe 2-3 weeks ago—called support and they didn't see anything wrong with the line, but had me run speed.fastaccess.com a few times and it showed around 1Mbit each time. They dispatched a tech last week, and of course when he was here (which was around 5:30 p.m.) the speed was almost 6Mbit and he couldn't find a problem. (A couple of hours after he left, the speed took a dive again.)

Last night I plugged a laptop into the NID and the download speed was still bad (just over 1Mbit) so I don't think it's my inside wiring. (As I type this at 7:30 in the morning, a Speakeasy speed test reports 5.8Mbit download speed.)

Because it seems to consistently occur at night, I don't think it's my modem (although that isn't ruled out). I never noticed a problem before approx. 3 weeks ago.

Is it possible that oversubscription is causing a bottleneck at night, when everybody else is doing their downloads? And how do I best get AT&T to recognize and fix the problem?

Well, a tech came out again this evening and he tested at the NID—confirmed that there is a speed problem and that it's network-related.

A line tech is supposed to come out and do additional testing sometime in the next 4-5 days.
