| Wrong aspect ratio on channel 11 - Dish SD. Other providers?
Hi,
We've got Dish Network standard def. receivers and 4:3 TV's and periodically for the past year channel 11 (WTTW) will broadcast in the wrong aspect ratio. It's been squished in on the sides so everyone looks stretched vertically and I assume if we were watching on a 16:9 set it would look correct. Eventually they catch the mistake and it goes back to the way it should look, sometimes after a few hours, sometimes a few days.
Anyway, since the DTV switch it has been wrong all the time. I called channel 11 the other day to complain and was transferred to a flunky who said the problem must be from Dish Network. When I asked why my other 250 channels from Dish Network were the in the correct AR, she transferred me to the voicemail of their "technical guy" who never returned my call.
I know it's only a local PBS station, but you'd think they have people who know about this sort of thing.
So before I call again, can anyone on another provider (Comcast, DirecTV, etc.) verify the wrong aspect ratio in SD on a 4:3 set? Thanks a bunch to anyone who can help. |

| reply to cc77 I have comcast in Glen Ellyn and put on channel 11. There is barney and the picture has black boxes around the edges. A icon saying WTTW HD came up for a few seconds. I wonder if wttw isn't giving cable and dish providers a sd feed and dish/comcast/att/etc. have to use the hd feed and convert it to sd. I don't know how att uverse, directv, or wide open west do it though.
The rest of the locals appear fine, but i don't use the sd feeds. Just the hd feeds. -- The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult. The day he forgives himself, he becomes wise. Alden Nowlan |

| reply to cc77 Jan,
What you're talking about makes no sense. I specifically said all the other channels are coming in correctly - hundreds of them. And there is no format button anywhere; I have SD receivers and old tube style 4:3 TV's. Thank you though.
djdanska,
Thank you for trying, but you didn't say if the aspect ratio was wrong. Was Barney stretched vertically so that he looked taller than he should be? That WTTW HD logo always comes up, even back when they were broadcasting in the correct ratio for SD viewers. Your theory about converting the feed makes sense, but I don't know if that's problem or what I should do about it if it is. Calling customer service for Dish or WTTW just gets you through to low-level people who have no idea what I'm talking about. Thank you.
Can anyone else please try to look for me? |

| reply to cc77 It wasn't stretched, no. It pretty much looked widescreen, with the black bars at the bottom but with one change. The black bars on the side. The picture did not fill the entire screen. Just the middle. Kinda like a large picture in picture but with it covering 80 percent of the screen. It looks like i don't have your issue. The picture is back to normal now. I will look at it later.
Is it possible that when i see the black bars at the top and sides, your provider is stretching the image, but my provider isn't? If you run into it again, you can see if i am online and send me an IM and i can see what i am seeing on my end.
On the other hand, i could be completely wrong. Anybody's guess. -- The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult. The day he forgives himself, he becomes wise. Alden Nowlan |

| reply to cc77 Hi djdanska,
Thank you! I'm watching right now and I have the black bars on the sides as well (no bars on the top/bottom right now), and everything looks stretched vertically (the cartoon kids look very tall and thin) on my 4:3 set. On your 16:9 set it probably looks normal, but if you were watching on a 4:3 set you'd see what I mean. Thanks.
Anyone else with SD from a provider other than Dish? Thanks. |

Mine is filling up the entire screen. My tv is widescreen though. Oh well. Somethings going on with wttw though. Not entirely sure though. | reply to cc77 What model of remote control do you have? Is there a button that says Aspect, or Zoom, or Pix Shape? The shape can also depend on which set of inputs you are using to connect from the dish or cable to te TV. You may have to cycle between the HDMI input, the VCR input, the DVD input, the coax, etc.
The aspect of each of the HD stations differs. It also differs depending on the shape of the original programming. Many old movies and TV shows were originally filmed in 4:3 and will be broadacst that way. New shows may be broadcast in !6:9. |

1 edit | reply to cc77 Thank you for your ideas but you both don't understand what I'm talking about. There is no possible way for me to change anything related to the aspect ratio - no zoom button, or shape option or any such thing.
I have a Dish Network model 522 DVR receiver (two tuner) and a model 322 receiver (two tuner) - neither of which have ANY possible way for me to change the aspect ratio or picture shape. They are both SD receivers connected to 3 old tube TV's from the early/mid-nineties via S-video, composite, and coax out - both boxes, all four tuners, and all three TV's are experiencing the issue on all connections.
The problem is either from WTTW (99.9% probability) or Dish Network (.1% probability). I'm just asking fellow Chicagoins with SD setups (SD-only receivers and 4:3-only TV's) from other providers (DirecTV, Comcast, RCN, etc.) to look and see if they are having the same issue of the picture being stretched vertically on this one channel. In fact, other Chicagoins with SD setups similar to mine who are also on Dish Network are welcome to chime in and let me know whether or not they are also seeing what I see to prove the issue is not on my end. Thank you. |
