| [BC] Trying to get faster speed
hello, I have been trying to get a faster speed on telus adsl. I have 3.0mbps for almost 3 years but never got the whole 3.0. When i first got adsl they say that I can get 3.0 but recently I phone and ask. They say my house can barely get adsl and technically not qualify for adsl. So, they change me to a 1.5 plan and changed the price on the bill. I was wondering why they can tell me i can get adsl but not give me the speed and can you help me find out what is going on. thank you

| you're too far from the equipment to get you the faster speeds. the farther you get, the less speed you'll get. it's called attenuation.
this is why it's always advertised as 'up to' since they can't guarantee the max speed at long lengths. granted most people can achieve the max speeds without any problem so they price it as a standard price for a range of speed to keep it simple.

You have to be within the distances indicated on the graph to get the speeds you want.
As psydfx mentioned as well, it's also a matter of attenuation. If your modem won't sync roughly lower than 62 db, you won't get faster speed.

I wouldn't grant that without some specific source. I know very few people who are getting anywhere near maximum speeds on Telus ADSL. At home in Richmond I get a max of 2 Mbps. At work in central Vancouver I get a max of 3.8 Mbps. What percentage of people really get 6 Mbps or higher? Most customers may not even know if they are getting full speed. |

What is the base speed of the connection you use at work? If it's been there for a while it's probably on a 4.0 plan.
many customers get better than this... BUT these speeds would still be acceptable.
Your quoting 2 connections (1 at work and 1 at home) is not really showing anything either.
Very few people get 6.0 or higher.... BECAUSE they're not on 6.0 or higher plans... 100% of people who are on the turbo plan get higher than 6.0, they'll all be between 10-15.0

I use to get around 5.1mbps on the 6.0 package (which is almost maxed given the overhead).
I currently get between 12 and 13mbps on turbo which is almost as high as it gets.
one thing I found when talking to to the tech who was fixing my line was that the length of line can actually very.. even from the same apartment to the same co... I guess they take different paths to the co.. so he had to test a few lines to find the one with the shortest path. |

Comparing pairs in the same bundle will get you the shortest cable, but that's the worst one to use. The shorter the cable, the fewer twists it has. Pairs with more twists will be more resistant to noise, even though they're longer.
Pairs 1, 17, and 9 are the best for DSL because they have the most twists. Pair 10 is the worst.
There are cases where CO cables take different paths. A couple of times, I've noticed some cable tests shorter, and written a note in the SAC box.
The way to test length on different cables is to pick a pair, and test the same pair in each bundle.
Either way, if you get full speeds, that's what's really important, not what pair you're on. |
