WB won't load one particular website (ours)!

We've not had this problem before—18 months of clear sailing—but for the past two days all the pages on our site are not loading here at the office; they load fine through other servers, just not here through WildBlue. Other websites, email, etc, are loading no problem. So, assuming it's not an issue with GoDaddy (our domain host) since other ISPs are serving up our site fine, any ideas on what the problem is, and what we can do to correct it?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

There have been problems in the past with GoDaddy sites. Have you tried it with the optimizer both on and off. If you care to post the site others can see if it works for them.

You may want to read the following link about this subject.

Solutions that have worked sometimes in the past are:

1. turn the proxy settings on or off. In the Firefox v2 browser starting from the pull down menu select:

Tools\Options...\Advanced\Network\Settings...

If "Direct connection to the Internet" is selected, then you are not using the proxy.

If "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" is selected, then you are using the proxy.

2. Use a web based proxy to access the site, such as Otunnel.

Both of these methods present different IP address of different servers to the Go Daddy site.

Thank you for your replies; I just checked back in, sorry for the delay.

EarthSignal, nice of you to check it out and post the WB forum thread here, but this thread is mine, actually. I just posted an update to this mystery, which at least provides some entertainment for those who wish a preeminent tech conundrum.

Spice300, I'm using Firefox 3, found the advanced settings for network in preferences, where I had the "No proxy" option checked; switched to the "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network," with no change.

We are using a proxy like otunnel in the meantime, but it's a poor stopgap, slow loading, spotty javascript, etc.

Strange, I've now been banned from the WB forum that I've been trying to get help from. They might be surprised to learn that we're one of John Malone's companies (he owns Wild Blue). Not sure where to go from here, since they won't even accept any contact from my IP address.

Hmmm...

There is another possible solution which is to use a proxy at one of the other Wildblue gateways. It is more convenient than using a web based proxy. I need to know which spot beam you are using to give you suggestions. It would be helpful if you would post the URL of your site, so we can try loading it from our computers and report the results back to you.

Since you have a LAN you will need to change the proxy setting in your router.

Over on the WB forum (Wild Blue World) it's been suggested I try openDNS and report the findings. I'll be doing this in a little while (have to head back to the office). Hope it's no offense to be posting on that thread (two-timing?) as well —don't seem to be overlapping much.

Our website's www.hasslerdressage.com.

How can I tell what "spot beam" we're on?

Thanks, Spice300,

Paul

I can probably figure out your spot beam if you tell me the ZIP code where your dish is located. Since you got WB 18 months ago, you are probably using the satellite WB-1.

My computer is directly connected to my WB modem. Hassler Dressage loads for me under the following proxy usage:

Cheyenne proxy for Anik-F2.
Laredo proxy for Anik-F2.
Laredo proxy for WB-1.
Riverside proxy for Anik-F2.
Seattle proxy for WB-1.
Syracuse proxy for Anik-F2.
Syracuse proxy for WB-1.
Winnipeg proxy for Anik-F2.

The page does not load when I use:

direct connection to the Internet.

I think your solution will be to set your router to use the WB proxy at your gateway.

In my opinion this problem loading Go Daddy sites is related to conflicts between settings on the Go Daddy and Wildblue servers. There has been a report that WB knows about this problem but refuses to alter their setting to fix it because only a few customers have the problem.

Chesapeake City, MD means you are likely using spot beam 126, the Syracuse gateway and the satellite WB-1. The IP of the Syracuse proxy for WB-1 is 75.104.128.60. Try putting this IP in your router as a manual proxy. If this does not work, I'll post the IP of one of the other proxies for you to try.

Any chance you could direct me to the article you refer to, on WB's entrenchment on the issue? Thanks.

Not sure how to find the WB proxy, though I think I see where I'd need to add it in my network preferences (there's the one already there for WB, grayed out so I can't delete); I'd just add it, yes?

The openDNS site had me configure for ethernet...will these also work for the router/wireless?

WHAT a hassle this has been! (thanks for your help!!!)

Oops, I should have read more carefully. I've added 75.104.128.60 to the DNS window. It's below the grayed out WB address. Didn't work (did save settings...do I need to reboot?)

It will take me a while to look for it. I think it was in one of the posts here at BBR for the problems loading Wells Guitars and concerned the Syracuse gateway which your are also using.

Since the error returned is "The connection was reset," not a DNS or page not found error, using Open DNS will probably not solve the problem. Using Open DNS will require you to use a direct connection to the Internet, that is, present your real IP to the Go Daddy site. In this configuration your site will not load for me either. In one of your posts above you indicated that your original proxy setting was to use a direct connection. This is the setting that is causing the problem. You must use a proxy. Lacking experience in routers I do not know how to give you instructions to set the proxy in your router, but I do know that changing the setting in your computer while using a router will not make any difference. The Go Daddy site will see the IP presented by your router through the WB servers. A web based proxy works because the Go Daddy site only sees the servers from the web based proxy.

The proxy address does not belong in a location for a DNS address. In Firefox it belongs in the Window entitled "Connection Settings" which I gave you instructions for how to access in a previous post. Select the option for "Manual proxy configuration" and put it in the box for that option. If there is a check box for "Use this proxy server for all protocols," then put a check in the box to enable it. These instructions will only work if your computer is directly connected to your WB modem. In Firefox you do not need to reboot after changing network setting. A router might need to be power cycled.

Spice300, here is the link he has been posting on at the other forum which has several suggestions. I posted some links on the subject going back to 2006-2007 which might save some time on your search. When he first posted his site I could connect to it with no problem but since that time I no longer can bring it up.

Here are few threads about this problem, some date back to 2006-2007. This is not something new.

This worked for one person.
I have resolved this issue. I can tell you what I did to fix this. I had assigned IP addresses for my host computers so I can open and close ports when needed for different applications. Under the preferred and alternate DNS server settings on my network adapters, I used the DNS server addresses that are popsted on the WB admin page. These are no longer working when connecting to godaddy sites (I don't know why, but they aren't). I used 12.213.112.61 which I got from telneting into my router config and the godaddy sites are working again.

I'm going to go over this with a Wild Blue dealer in the area on Monday. Go Daddy is still delivering the site fine, and some Wild Blue are getting it while others are not. It's very frustrating because over on the WB forum, where I've been blocked from posting by the admin (?? at least it appears this way, though I've been posting via proxy), there's a whole lot of "it's NOT WB's fault." But I'm not so sure now.

ES, I did see the solution you found for the one person, but I'm not sure how to try it out, nor if it's even the same situation as ours.

I'll know more Monday and will post what I find. As well to the WB forum. At least I know it's not a problem in our office area network.

The solution that EarthSignal copied and pasted here involves the person manually using the primary and secondary DNS server addresses provided by his Wildblue provider. His reference to "WB admin page" makes me uncertain whether his service provider was Wildblue direct or the NRTC. When he changed his manual selection to 12.213.112.61 (the DNS server at Wildblue's Winnipeg gateway), the problem was fixed.

If you connect one computer directly to your WB modem, then you will be able to change the proxy settings in Firefox to test whether using or not using one of WB's proxies would work for you. If successful, the next step would be to make your router use the proxy.
